I need to do the top end on my 2000 bullet. 22,000 miles on it and I had the new electric ignition too far advanced and smoked the piston. Dangit.  :-[
I'm only finding parts from Ebay sellers or Hitchcocks. Is there nobody in the USA stocking parts these days?

You're on your own with the IB, out of production for 16 years now. IB parts are a VERY niche market. I'd buy from Hitchcock's or Price Part and get deep motor stuff that actually fits & works. Shipping is cheap compared to doing it twice or fragging the cases.

I thought the USA was full of niche after-market auto shops the likes of which we don't have (so much) in these longitudes.

Do you not have a specialist piston supplier close by? Plenty of other applications use 84mm pistons, you want something with a 3/4" wrist pin and the same crown height from the wrist pin center, not too large a dome! A lot of pistons use 20mm pins, that might be an option if you ream the small end of the con-rod to suit.

Let us know whether you can shop local this way or still have to buy from the UK.

Nothing local for me, the only engine machine shop who can even bore a cylinder charges $90-100 a hole with a timeline of "somewhere better than a month..." I was trying to avoid that option by just sourcing new parts.

A forged slug and fitted alloy barrel yields better ring sealing, better heat transfer & less weight. Bolt on and you are done.

Get a second set of rings & circlips "just in case".... ;D The hardened cylinder stud washers are nice too.

Your mechanic is highly likely to be the guy in the mirror. Modern mechanics are thoroughly confused by points ignition, carbureted pushrod singles. You don't want to pay for "practice".

A source of trouble is the carb-to-head rubber mount. Toss the OEM kak and cut yourself a 1 3/8" piece of 1 1/4" fiber reinforced radiator hose. Use two real hose clamps & be happy. No cracks or sag. The Yamaha Banshee gauze air cleaners are $14 a pair from Amazon. These offer more internal volume. Unless you ride in the rain a lot they are perfect. Rejet as per Hitchcock's chart.

I bought my piston and a used head from Hitchcocks when I did mine.
You have to figure that any of these parts will need to come from overseas, so you are going to pay the shipping either as a line item or built into the cost of the part itself.
Personally, I'd rather buy GOOD quality stuff from a place that knows these beasties inside and out (Hitchcocks and their crew).
Service from them has always been stellar. I don't bother shopping anywhere else anymore.

Buy from Hitchcock's, I bought a bike that the PO installed an other market piston, on a 90 degree day I got about 10 miles before the piston seized, left me walking. When the piston was removed it had all sort of highs and lows, clearly it was not a correctly milled.  Four or five hundred collars later I had a proper fitted piston.  So, pay now or pay later!
