TBH, I can see no logic to having something as complicated as the original two box setup.
I took one look at that setup on my 3,000 mile 350, with its saggy filter and tatty, rotted rubber connecting pipes, took it all off and fitted a decent quality, washable cone filter for less than the price of replacing the two rubber hoses.
I’ve since replaced the Mikcarb and fitted a “Wassell” AMAL concentric. That came with a screw on bellmouth, which I wanted to keep but also wanted a filter. I found a foam filter with a wide enough mouth to fit over it, so now I have a relatively unrestricted inlet supplying filtered air.
