I've been doing a cosmetic/clean-up of my 2006 Electra.  One of the issues was a sprag clutch.

I just re-installed it.  Spun it up, and nothing but spinning.  So I put it in backwards?

Also, When I engage the starter (new switches, wiring, big american solenoid), the damned thing keeps spinning, even when I release the switch.  What did I get wrong with the wiring?

Thanks for any help.  Ugh.

Not having replaced my Sprag yet, I cannot say anything re your installation.
The continued spinning might be a stuck Start Relay.

If you haven't already seen it, there's a free download of the workshop manual, courtesy of the forum's admins.

The book shows a better detail.  I looked all over the internet, and thought I got it right.  Oh well, it will be easier to do this time....

As far as the solenoid goes, If I disconnect the white wire from the "I" terminal and leave the blue wire on the "S" terminal, the solenoid operates as it should.  What/Where does the "white" wire go?  There must be a feedback coming through that keeps the starter running.  Or does the White wire connect to the solenoid on the "S" terminal too?

Confused on that one...

At my age, a White wire doesn't ring a bell, but it goes with the territory here.  ;) I'll take a looksee and get back to you ASAP unless Adrian or tooseevee does first. It's late and colder than you-know-what in the garage.

The factory manual wiring diagram for the starter and charger circuits shows the two heavy duty leads across the solenoid and two other wires. Blue and white as the live feed to the solenoid from the starter button and black to ground/earth via the clutch switch and neutral switch. Don't know if it had to be wired differently for the US version of the Electra-X.

I've not replaced the sprag in the '08. It is still good because I have used the ES as little as possible since Day One and tried to always have the battery at 100%. I get instant starts with the electric (just barely touch it) because I've spent many many hours OCDing the carb to perfection and the Pertronix coil, I'm sure, helps also and the switch to a Champion plug made an incredible difference. My main enemy is 9.8:1 compression and no compression release.

I'm not sure ( :) :) ) but can the sprag be put in backwards?? Doesn't sound right.

Reference the white wire: I'll look later.

Adrian: Is the '06 schematic pretty much the same as the '08?

A rather hesitant yes to that, tooseevee.  ;D

As you know the AVL Classic and the Electra-X are almost but not quite the same animal (I've been wrong about this stuff before), plus I don't quite know what changes the US Department of Transportation might have mandated to the electrics apart from the 5 3/4" headlamp.

I've done a pretty good refurbish of ALL my wires, but the colors are still pretty much as the wiring diagerm I got from Pete Snidal many years ago which is very close to the wiring colors I found when I went through the wiring system.

A large RED comes from my battery to the starter relay.  A Red/White and a Black go to the starter switch from the Relay terminals. A heavy Black wire then runs from one side of the Relay to the Starter. The Starter grounds through the frame.

I've also added a Bosch relay between the starter switch and the main starter relay. Probably overkill, but it keeps the full 12V (or is it amps?) out of the switch which will cause arcing damage over time and intermittent non-contact. Every non-contact is a burn on the points of the switch. All the starter switch has to do is close the little relay contacts.

My Main Relay is for a snowblower or an ATV, I think. Ebay.

The "white" wire is the one that goes to the clutch switch.

The wires on this bike were a very big big bodge.  I've almost (almost) got them put right.

Thanks.

Oddly enough, my schematic for my '06 ElectraX is spot on.
The start wiring is in series from the neutral switch through the clutch switch to the start relay.  At the relay the Blue/White wire and the black wire both attach to the small terminals for activation of the relay.

Considering the seemingly constant running changes on the factory floor I'm frankly amazed that my wiring colors actually match the schematic.  :o

Got it.  Sprag clutch change gets easier over time.  Took me about 90 minutes in and out to switch the clutch around.  Starts as is should now.
