Been thinking about which new bike to buy after selling off all my bikes. I decided to give up the idea of just buying and collecting and hopefully ride just buy the one bike and ride it for a change. Finally narrowing it down to three units. Honda CB650S-Interceptor 650-Honda CB500X
here is the link to my video of the bike picked up yesterday

Bill, next year you are going to have to dump that new Interceptor and buy one of the RE 650 Scramblers shown in the beginning of this banana-toting video:

Yes, she IS a fine looking chromey beast, ain't she? And what is more, she gets to wear a proper "INTERCEPTOR" decal on her sidebox instead of our Americano "INT650", which kinda sounds like a deworming med for pets..."Is your dachshund dragging its ass around the carpet in circles? Ask your veterinarian about INT650!"

I finally saw a Honda "Interceptor" today, cause of the legal trademark infringement kerfuffle that led to the special decals here in the Land of the Plastic Spork, and had to resist the urge to kick it over.

The name game goes the other way too. Watsonian Squire just renamed their coolest looking sidecar. The one that was a copy of a fuel tank from a WWII bomber. How cool is that? It was called The Meteor! Last week they renamed it Prescot. That's not a typo. It is either a misspelling of the town in Arizona or more likely the name of someone who works for them. Why in the hell would they do that??? Probably because Royal Enfield just reregistered the name Meteor.

I wrote to Watsonian to express my displeasure. I even used Suzuki as an example of a company making mistakes with product names. The SV650 was one of the best budget sportbikes ever made. Then one day they renamed it Gladius. Nobody bought them. Gladys?? Gladiator? Gladiolus?  Know what they call it now? SV650. And they are selling once again.

And who remembers their Madura? Really? A bike named after a swollen foot disease?

RE could make more money off us by leaving the INT decal off and selling us Interceptor decals, as long as we promise not to put them on our bikes ;)

"Gladius" is actually semi-cool in a manly-man slashy-stabby glisteny and vaguely homoerotic kind of way, like "Scimitar" or "Sabre"...especially if you say them kinda "lispy". However, in the hashtag #MeToo Era of Woke "Rapier" might be a tad dicey for the gals in the Marketing Department, even Edwina, who's kind of a kinkster hosebeast and a sprag's sprag.

Thing is, I doubt most folks, apart from Boston Latin School washouts like me, know that a gladius was the short sword used by Roman gladiators, for which they were named.

Think you may find
Prescott is connected to the Speed Hill Climb https://www.prescott-hillclimb.com/ and not a former deputy prime minister of the u.k. Who punched a protester that threw an egg at him on camera ????,turns out he was a former boxer in the navy, kinda always liked him after that ????

after the bike had sat for 2 days I decided it was time to kick it over and take it for a quick run and see exactly how it performed. after-all the previous unit I had did run well apart from one minor issue so I expected the same from this.

They are available like that in Europe. Stuart F. has them on his bike.......I am going to get a pair also.

The current trend seems to be to give the "rights" to a name to whoever first pays the registration fee at some obscure clerks office somewhere, regardless of past history.

it is only a matter of time before some bright spark registers the names "water" and "motorcycle" and bans everyone else from using them.

Well it must be said the  North American version of the Korean era Sabre with just 6 x 0.50 cal and a J47 engine was a touch insipid ... however the Aussie version produced at the Commonweath Aircraft Factory, fitted with a Rolls Royce Avon engine and a pair of 30mm Aden revolving autocannons was faster had a higher operational ceiling and had ridiculously more firepower.

Nice video! Keep up the good work. I have never used a drone. Been thinking about one for a while but all of my "disposable" income has gone into bikes this year, like most years.

I like the song! Is that you singing? If you have ever adjusted the valves on an antique VW, you know how to do this. It is even easier than the bike because they are easy to reach. There are some youtube videos that say you don't have to remove the gas tank. Technically that's true but it is so much easier with the tank out of the way and it only takes a few minutes to remove. I did have trouble the first time pulling the fuel line at the "quick release" but after the first time it is simple. Also, you don't need a new gasket. Just clean the old one. It is reusable rubber. Then glue the gasket into the valve cover. That prevents it from slipping around on reassembly.

I could say it was me BUT..lol it was actually the wife singing it. I will have a go at adjusting the tappets myself although I have never done that task before as I usually rather pay some-one to do mechanical work. this time I am curious to see how its done so I will have a go and see what happens.
note taken on that quick release on the tank fuel line.

I had a go at adjusting the tappets today and it actually worked out ok. took the bike for a run afterwards and all good. never done that task before to anything...bike or car! so was lucky to end up with a good result and no leaks.

I keep getting the feeling that sooner or later some Euro bureaucrat will realize it it is just too easy to remove motorcycle mufflers and mandate that from now on they be welded on to the bike's chassis.   :o

You do a great job on your videos. I have known world class musicians and songwriters. They can sell out a venue but let them get one bad review and they are torn up about it. The world has more than its share of a$$holes. Just ignore them and they will go bother someone else. I have attempted to make a few GoPro videos. It is not easy. If someone doesn't appreciate your efforts, let them try to make them.

This reminds me of the first motorcycle race I ever attended, the Sacramento Mile. Harley V-Twins sliding on dirt at 120 mph! The lead changing several times each lap. This loudmouth 300 pound "biker" in front of me was shouting at one of the racers that they weren't up to his standards. I told him that the guy in LAST PLACE was better than everyone in the stands. Some people need some perspective.

olhogrider is right, of course - however, I do love a good rant now and again, and yours, wildbill, was one of the more creative I've seen in awhile!  ;D

Forget about the haters.  If you post something online, you will  be disliked by someone!  Unless... a thumbs-down affects your channel somehow?  In that case, fire away!!!

On the upside,  at least thumbs down guy must be making an effort to watch the video. That has to be a good thing? You can't make everyone happy.

the story is now out that a lot of the non performing you-tube channels will close in a matter of months -that will include mine. not enough looks/subs and don't make any money for youtube. in some ways I don't care that much any-more. if I go it won't save me a few $$$ it will stop me spending thousands of $$$ on something which has turned into a bad addiction with little to no reward.
going back a couple of months that is one reason I decided to get rid of all the bikes. I was just buying new bikes and doing youtube test for a few hundred looks...lol then dropping $2k up to $4500 on the sale.
I went through 10 bikes last year - 8 were new to try and see which would get it going and probably lost $30K or more. plus the new car and the watches and the other crap so 019 was an expensive year. in some cases I bought new bikes just for the sake of trying to get the friggin channel moving. sure I have ads on the channel and I got back some cash. yeah like $182 in total...LOL

the this guy got me on a bad day and on the tube-they are always there....lol

Jim Kubitza commented: "This Interceptor vid sucks. Doesn't even show the bike until half way through. I could give a shit about railroad tracks."

well jim -here's what I would do if I were you. save up your money and make sure you pay in cash-just like me. then go out and buy a bike. get yourself a camera and a working channel.
go out and waste your time and shoot a railroad track and don't forget the train plus add the bike at the start of the video so I can leave early. edit such and put it together.
let me know when its up and running and I will evaluate YOUR work and give you an honest appraisal free of charge

Well said. Very few people appreciate how hard it is to make a YouTube video channel work. Kudos to you for the attempt, even if it folds next year. I've enjoyed them for sure.

Well, I guess I'm just the opposite of this guy because I have several highly desirable bikes and a parts stash even I can't believe to look at if I feel like looking!

I mostly watch YouTube bike related video for other things, like (hopefully) beautiful drone footage of countryside different from my own and genuine personality, if the uploader has one that is LoL, and if it's an attractive girl also is great if she's not a total dipshit. Another thing I like about the girls is how they're light on the stupid mansplaining of everything bike people already know ;)

I too have a drone i bought  few weeks back but so far only put it up once. Since then been too windy to try again. Only time will tell if the channel stays or goes so anything can happen from the 10th December onwards. i was told one day you could go to your channel and it no longer exists and your totally blocked.

Now I wouldn't class my videos as - that good - but I have seen worse too but saying that I never leave anything negative on another channel either. You don't know who it offends and some are trying pretty hard to hit targets.

I've asked a couple of the bigger channels why don't they do clips on thumbs down hits and see if they can make it compulsory on youtube if you hit the thumbs down button - your username is shown and you have to comment why! or you action is void. I think that would stop a lot of this crap. I am not totally against the down vote but lets be realistic-any one of you could go to youtube now and click on 100 video and thumb down the lot and not watch one. Just saying.

At least if it was compulsory the creator could decide if he/she would like to respond.
Some guys say they put 16 hours into a clip. not me! I'd say when I bring it home and sit by the computer 30 to 45 minutes max. I would want to earn real money to sit for that long -not bird seed.

I know my line of work isn't as a you tube creator but I do like trying it.
I was actually going to run a bird breeding/mutation channel instead but bird breeders are an extremely jealous lot of humans and the hot items I carry in stock are expensive and rare and annoys them and they are very hard to breed.
So I may have done a bit of cash this year but in reality it really wasn't mine. I sort of just leased it off my feathered friends..lol

Didn't even give this guy a thumbs down, LoL

I mean, what's the point anyway? Even if you thumbs down someone for a perceived good reason it isn't going to change anything.
Sometimes I'll leave a negative comment to a really annoyingly bad guitar riff for example, but never a thumbs down. Then I'll block them from showing up in my feed again!

Nice one. Interesting that about the oil. I'm thinking of a 'bonus', i.e. non-official, change soon. I'm on 1,500 miles.

Maybe I'm easily amused, but I really enjoyed the constantly moving views of that gorgeous chrome machine!  8)

The golden color of the ground was pretty cool too (and the arched gate in the background). I first thought it was autumn leaves during the ride, but when you stopped the dirt was the same color!

If I heard you right, that Silk-O-Lene oil you tried out was pretty expensive stuff, must've had 24 k gold as an additive!   :o ;D

that particular oil cost me AU$110 plus AU$30 for delivery as I could not pick it up locally. so far I've run it roughly 500 miles in the bike. prior to that over the past 7 years all my bikes have run the one oil Penrite hpr gas 10 - its a semi synthetic.

so far I have not notice any big difference in the bike with that oil. some may but I have not. but it may be just too early to notice. I did have gearbox change issues and had a neutral issue from 5th to 6th gear.

I dropped the shifter from 31cm to 29.5 and that helped some-what. did the oil change and noticed very little. adjusted the clutch and that did and so far in the last 200 miles have only hit that neutral incident once.

now if the oil was on the shelf I may pay $110 again but a pre-order at $140 - I don't think I will go the distance.

if they make a fully synthetic i'd really like to try a Penrite oil next and I might do that at say 3000 klm as I feel confident I will still have the bike then. i'm just on 1300 klm now plus this is actually the furthest I've rode an Endield now for quite a few years...lol

I think it's a killer looking bike!  Lots of bling!
I did a LOT of thinking before choosing my Ravishing Red Interceptor ... visualizing it AFTER all of my wish-list mods, which include a candy red paint job on the side panels, tank and front fender.

my first 650 was actually the ravishing red.
one day I will have to give it its first clean. i'm not use to having one bike for so long...lol

here's the clip to the ride with slash/cut exhausts. ive ordered another set of exhausts as I think these take away the balance of the bike but for AU$160 it was worth a play

I know you did this as a preventive measure, but can you feel a difference? My Triumph ran awful at low rpm until I installed the BoosterPlug. Then I disconnected it for the first service and the software update from the dealer was almost as effective. Still not a smooth as the Interceptor. Also wondering why you didn't go for the Powertronic that's made specifically for the Interceptor. It's only a few bucks more than the BoosterPlug. Not nearly as much as a Powercommander.

I think I read somewhere the powertronic is more involved to install. now I did test ride the bike with booster and exhaust today and I must confess I was impressed with the overall outcome! I still have not done the air filter mod either but have ordered one in. here's my actual test ride clip

no kidding with that exhaust and booster plug it would knock over a standard 650 very easy...lol if you look back at my clip I am not even doing full throttle hits. just roll ons. so far in 1000 miles I have never ever hit the throttle stopper. just ordered the dna air filter plus my new exhausts may arrive today so if so I may fit and compare them.
I wouldn't say I like these -I just got them cheap and thought i'd try them out. I know I wouldn't pay the dealer $500 for them and I like throwing money...lol

Those are the same ones I got. I thought they were a bit loud. I'm back to the stock ones for now. Really liking the AEW 201 that sit horizontal instead of the upsweep. They do it with a clever downward bend at the inlet. But they are more money and I bought three bikes last week. ::)

I find the offset end cap on these to be to quite appealing.

Thinking maybe I'll contact him about acquiring an unfinished set. Without brackets or front covers welded on, also without any polishing or cleanup of the welds

Maybe your "gumtree" is different than the Eucalyptus trees we have growing in the Phoenix area but, the Eucalyptus trees are known for loosing big branches and sometimes even major parts of the tree trunks when the big winds during monsoon season blow in.

My neighbor had one growing next to their driveway and when they got home one evening their entire drive was filled with downed tree.  Good thing it didn't take out the roof on their house.

Gumtrees here are bad for that, for sure. In big wind but also high temperatures. Last week we had 5 days over 40 deg and I noticed a few large limbs on the ground or roofs around the suburb.

Have the fires hit your area yet, or been thru.  Getting messy on the lower east coast.

only that smaller one a couple of weeks back. there is not that much vegetation about where I live due to the inland drought.
much more fuel for the fires to burn along the coastal areas.
where I did that drone shot in the other video on the pine forest road -that area has gone up before and all along that road
plus that road I rode where the tree limb fell on the road-it would be very hard to control a fire in that country.

todays giveaway comp clip

fell down-another heavy timbered road area-very hard to control a fire in there.

my 2,500 km review on the bike

https://youtu.be/aJQW79aolA4
Great stuff. It's hard to find a reliable long-term review of a stock Interceptor. Mine has 3,500km up, and the experience has been more or less the same as you describe. I've also had some false neutrals between 5th and 6th (on the way up only), but they are getting rarer, and preloading the shifter, or just taking your time, sorts it out.

And I too put in an interim oil & filter change -- at 3,200km (although my Interceptor is in mph on the clock) -- using Motul 7100 4t 10w-50. Red, with Ester, like Silkolene but a hell of a lot more reasonably priced. The drain plug came out clean with absolutely no debris on it.

I'll actually re-watch this vid to make sure I've got all your observations. So far, I'm really happy with the bike in every department. I'm still mulling the booster plug, and happy to take my time on that one, as I have other little improvements in line before it.(So far, no train has come over a bridge to run me over.  ;))

the 650 motor appears a lot cleaner in the internal compared to the old C5 days of loaded with all types of rubbish but i too like the idea of the oil change at around the 3500 klm mark or 3000 after the first change.

Right now those automatic ticket-dispensing cameras are illegal in California, but San Francisco is making a big push in the state legislature to make them legal in that city and to reduce the speed limit throughout the town to 20 mph.  They claim that they have a speeding problem in San Francisco.  That is very surprising as traffic is constantly jammed, with traffic signals at almost every intersection, and it is tough to average 10 mph during most daylight and evening hours.  Clearly what they really want is to collect more money than they already do from vehicle drivers visiting the city.  San Francisco has so many expensive "progressive" social programs going on that they are always short of money and constantly need more and are willing to get it from every source that they can dream up.  And they see speed cameras as being another goose that lays golden eggs.  I sure hope that they fail in their effort.

I don't envy you Bill having to dodge those things while riding around your area.

If San Francisco does go to the speed camera's, they will be sadly disappointed with the results.
It's the company that supplies the cameras that makes all of the money.  The government will get very little of it.
The pissed off people in Phoenix who rightfully or wrongly got cited by them, started the ball rolling to get rid of them but the fact that the government wasn't making any money off of them is the reason we got rid of them here.

The city that I worked for installed red-light cameras at some 10 intersections.  A couple of years ago they canceled the contract and removed the cameras.  And you are right about the reason for doing so.  It was all about money and not safety.  ;) After about 8 years they performed an audit and discovered that the cost of keeping the cameras in operation was much greater then the fines that they received for drivers running the lights when they were red. So away went the cameras - but they did leave the camera warning signs in place, which was likely about as effective at deterring red light runners as actually having the cameras issue tickets.   ::)

The cameras aren't illegal. The law clearly stated that they could not be operated by a for profit corporation. So what did they do? They installed them statewide and had a for profit corporation operate them. As soon as a judge found out, he threw out all of the previous convictions. The state lost millions so now they are scared to try it again.

Where San Francisco really has a problem is red light runners and crosswalk violators. The SFPD had a sting operation where a plain clothes officer would stand near the curb, then when a car was inches from the crosswalk the officer would step off the curb. Another one would take a picture and issue the ticket. I think video cameras have reduced the number of those scams.

I had a nice pop through the hills on a mate's interceptor, bought last year.  It's got 2500km on it now and feels very smooth and powerful enough. I was surprised at the difference in handling compared with my 535 CGT.  Thought they'd be pretty similar seeing the suspension components appear to be the same thing. The 650 is softer and can get a bit of a wallow happening through bends. Still managed to de chicken strip it though.  Got back on my GT and it felt a bit harsh for a couple minutes.

I noticed the gear shift in this bike is like butter. So smooth and I couldn't make it miss a shift or behave less than perfect even when I tried. Gearboxes must be a bit variable in these bikes.

Heres a pic. We've had some horrific bushfires here the last few weeks.

So, are you tempted to change?

No. As nice as the twin is,  I love my thumper.  I'd like to have a go on the 650 CGT but I don't have any burning need to own one. To each their own.

As much as the interceptor is a much more capable bike than my singles, I still like my stock single best. Singles have a certain character that drew me to RE originally. Still dig my interceptor sooo much though!!!

Great to see! That kids like a kid that has a snow day. I hope it continues and pulls you all out of the drought.

At the first 500km service the dealer changed the oil with Motul 10w-60 full synthetic. I never noticed any change in immediate performance but the gear changes have become much smoother as the Kms rack up ,2850 as of tonight. My next oil change will also be at 3500km the filter and oil is waiting. I picked up Penrite 10w-60 full synthetic. We can compare Penrite semi with full when I have some distance on the new oil.
