Royal Enfield at Bonneville, 1962
Add New Note
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Not my bike, but I thought people might appreciate the picture. It was sent to me by an old Southern California Royal Enfield racer named Bob Bledsoe.

This is Jimmy Enz's Royal Enfield Bonneville racer. Jimmy's bikes were later acquired by Don Sliger who set several longstanding records at Bonneville. This bike, with Don riding, eventually ran 160 mph (keep in mind, most modern motorcycles can't make that speed in the thin air at Bonneville!), and there was a twin-engined Interceptor which set a record for unfaired motorcycles at 205 mph, which has only within the last few years been beaten.
Also, note the streamliner sharing pit space with Jimmy and crew (sponsored by Cooper Motors).
Yes, that's "the World's Fastest Indian" of Burt Munro, his first year at Bonneville. He was given considerable assistance by Cooper Motors and Sammy Pierce, due to the Indian/RE association during the 1950's.

160mph?! WOW! Now that gives me a lot more reasons to break and fix my AVL.

Inspired by Paul and funded by dad!

If I didn't know the RE people are so trustworthy I'd swear that was a photoshop job.  Great pic, thanks!

This picture, and the ones of the guy racing an Enfield in Southern California were emailed to me several years ago by the racer, who's now living in Washington State.
I think he took the Bonneville picture, that's his wife, and Jimmy Enz's wife in front of the bike. He was probably helping out in Jimmy's pit crew.
The road test stuff came from a compilation of road tests from the English magazine they were originallly printed in.
The book was loaned to my by an English friend, and I made a point of scanning the entire thing. There was a lot more than just the Enfield tests. Vincent, BSA Goldstar, Norton, Triumph.
If anyone's interested, I can post up some of those too.
