Had the bike out for a couple hours yesterday and while in 4th or 5th gear I heard some "rattling" noises. Sounded like it was coming from the valvetrain area. I gassed up and decided to throw some 93 in it. Viola! The noise seems to have disappeared. Are AVL engines known to need premium fuel? Should I check my ignition timing? The last tank did net 71mpg which I was pretty happy with.

Check with your owners manual. However, I have gotten bad gas that would ping in some machines that were made for regular. Just FYI, Mobil was always the one that did it!
If you don't have a manual then you can just experiment around, but leave the tank a bit low on gas so if you get a bad load you can always dump some premium to fix it. You can try mid grade, too.

I run 87 or 90. It will ping more if I lug around on 87 . No power difference that I can tell.
I think 87 should be fine.

I face the same problem here in India. The AVLs have very high compression power, it's always above 145psi, when she runs hot at times, she pings. Retarding the cam timings might help in this case?

I find I can run regular in my '09 AVL in winter, but need to switch to mid-grade in summer to address pinging. It really makes a difference for me. (Dallas, TX)

I also run on regular gas [87] but in really hot weather sometimes have to use mid grade[89]
