Title: Rattling old metal panniers!
Post by: ScooterBob on July 15, 2010, 09:26:55 pm
Here's the real deal - They are now "officially" prototyped for the C5. IF you boys WANT 'em - you got to say so - soon and no "well I'm thinkin' about it" or "will they come in sky blue pink?" The reason is that it will take some time to have them made - and one run will probably be all you get until the middle of NEXT year ...... Let me know here on the forum and I'll see what I can get done for us ...... BTW - one set of prototypes goes off to the manufacturer - the other is for my DESERT bike! Muah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! (We'll see on that one as well - IF there is enough REAL interest to run with it .......) Thanks, fellows - make me proud here!

I see me a brown seat in there Bob. Why you gotta steal my Idea about a desert Bike? I was just think'in  about that.  :'(  About how much would they be? Maybe some RAT PATROL symbols on the tool boxes? Jerry can's instead of Panniers? It'll be a cool project.

That lovely brown leatherette seat was done for me as a test by one of the best "cloth and fabric" gals here in town. It resulted in the light tan seat covers for the Military bikes to match the bags. As for the desert tan bike? I've wanted one in the Enfield brand FOR YEARS! They were THE most popular CJ bikes that I sold .... by FAR! I'll have one yet .... ! Dang UTT!! As far as price goes - I believe we can do them for the same price as the OEM stuff - but we HAVE to get a fairly large GROUP ORDER. In "onesy-twosey" they would be about hella expensive for Enfield parts - but still a LOT cheaper than a set of Krausers for your airhead BMW! Hahaha!

These are NOT the same as the ones in the catalog - they are based on the OEM Military panniers and will accept the OEM pannier boxes with the PROPER rounded tops for the Military bikes. The catalog ones are pretty nice - but the boxes are square topped and the I think the racks, while bomb-proof sturdy - do not have JUST the right aesthetic appeal of the OEM ones ...... call me fussy ......

Will the panniers be alum or steel? Lockable? Will they work on the earlier bikes too(05 deluxe) or just the UCE bikes?

They will be JUST like the OEM ones (steel with hasp and staple on the back for your lock ...) - only they will be configured to fit the C5 - YOU can already them for YOUR bike as OEM, off the shelf, bolt right on with RE part numbers, so hush .... ! There are poor starving souls out here with C5 Military bikes with (GASP!) leather saddle bags!  ::)

Thanks for the feedback Bob, I was hoping for a lighter alum version.

Lighter aluminum? BOTH steel panniers together weight less than 12 pounds ... I don't think you'll get much lighter than THAT unless you make the panniers out of gutter tin - but then you'd better not drop a pencil into it - it'd go through the bottom! Hahaha!  ::)

That system looks like it could have been lifted off of my Iron Barrel Military and modded to suit the C5.

If it is I can vouch for the sturdiness.
It has been "tested"  :o  and found to give protection in addition to utility.

Split vinyl hose applied around the lip of the boxes gives very good weather sealing on mine and stops the rattle too.

In a sense - it WAS .... The sturdiness test was picking the bike up to about a 30 degree angle with the racks. They are everything that I want them to be - so they ought to suit the "common man" pretty well - hahaha!! I'm still waiting for a "Yay" or "Nay" from you guys, remember. So far - I don't see enough noise to make these - and someone is going to whine in January when they have nothing to do and they are looking at the backside of their naked C5 Military wondering why, oh, why are there no metal panniers to put on here ....... I ain't sayin' ... I'm just sayin' .....

Would the panniers work on a G5? What are the interior dimensions of the pannier rack  (or put another way, what are the dimensions of the stock metal cans)?

Is there some kind of taillight kit that goes with it? Wouldn't the regular taillights be in the way?

They will NOT fit the G5 - I prototyped them for the C5 ..... The G5 is a WHOLE 'nother ball of wax ...... Besides - YOU guys got all that Electra stuff that'll fit YOUR rides ....  ::)

:o I got a c5 military and I want. I've been in touch with royalenfield zone.com. Says they will build them to fit a c5, but they're in India. You just don't know if they are good enough. How much and where do I get them? Also how about a front fork rifle scabbard like the old WLA's?

SB,
Looks great! I think I need to pay a visit to your skunkworks factory to check out your toys.

I want one but it will require redoing all the work I did on my tail light.  :-\   Hmmmm......this could be the start of another project.  ;)

I need a ballpark figure before I can commit.  I want, but funds are low.

Seriously though, would the price be similar to Z90597, or significantly more?

I'm interested but I also need a ballpark figure. Including mounts and bags. Mine's the black C5. Probably send them for powdercoat.

Re: the scabbard.  I don't know where you intend to ride but that might get you some unwelcome attention.  There's a collector around here with a WLA who carried a dummy Thompson in his scabbard.  He got stopped by the cops so much that he eventually removed the scabbard.

Bob, I'm not clear if you are still able to do these. I noticed that the first post was almost a year ago. I am interested however and would like the ballpark cost.

Let us know.

Oh and thanks for thinkin of us. ;)
