Title: What is the vintage version of the zip-tie?
Post by: Stogierob on January 06, 2019, 10:31:38 pm
Hi, all!

what is the 1940's or 1950's version of the zip tie or wire tie?

Thanks
Rob

Bailing wire, used to tie bails of hay and the like used to be the wonder tie where I live.

It is a soft steel wire that comes in coils.  I even found it at my local Home Depot a couple of months ago so I know it is still available.

The user does have to have a pair of pliers to twist it so it's not nearly as easy as using a zip tie.
On the other hand, it is flame proof and it doesn't fall apart after it sits in the sunlight like the modern zip ties do.

perfect!

I've a lot of zip ties to replace once I strip out some of the wiring that i won't be using anymore.  there are also plenty of zip-ties elsewhere on the bike, and that's not very WWII-ish...

Thanks
Rob

They used rubber straps or leather ones to fit the application.  ERC

Grumburn - amazing bike!  Gorgeous!

leather and rubber straps will be my upgrade from simple twisted 14 gauge wire.  Once finished, my bike will (should?) look like it's been 'in service' for several years of semi-maintained/semi-neglected service in British Army during WWII.  Next time I need parts from Hitchcocks, i'll add a few of the leather and rubber straps to the cart...

Thanks!
