Hello All
I've put a new battery on my 535 GT and bow it won't start. Battery is the correct version, starter motor working well and I have a spark. The issue seems to be with fuel? When turning on the ignition and the engine switch I think there should be the sound of the fuel pump priming? This only seems to happen every 10-15 times I switch the ignition on, in between that I can just hear a click somewhere around the battery/under the saddle??? It won't kick start either, I'm convinced it's fuel flow related? Any help appreciated 🙏

Check the fuel pump relay, mounted on the battery frame, you may have pulled a wire when replacing the battery.....

There are 3 relays, I believe the top one is the fuel pump....

I've checked all the wires to the relays and all appear to be as they should be, I'm wondering if it's a faulty/broken relay that needs replacing....I've read its quite a common fault on this model?

Did you check the wires of continuity or just visually? The relays are mounted on the battery bracket so if there was a badly fitted terminal to a relay, changing the battery could indeed be the cause of a failure. The RE loom doesn't appear to be especially high quality...

Changing the relays is easy and cheap.

Good luck.

Just hold the button down until it’s running. Mine always starts first time, eventually.  ;)

It’s not a car; the starter drives an overrunning clutch so there’s nothing against have it spinning when the engine is running. The motor cannot over speed it.

I've just had a very similar issue with my 65 reg (2015) CGT. Following a read of this thread I thought I would try cleaning the contacts of the relays first as I'm too tight fisted to spend £s unless I have to! I did find some corrosion on one of each of the three relay terminals which I cleaned off as well as trying to de-gunge the connectors as well. I suspect this may only be a temporary fix and I'll have to buy new relays from Hitchcocks but it seems to be working at the moment.

That's just what I did; fine grade sandpaper to remove relay contact corrosion and then a like smear of grease before reinstating the relay.
