Still a good idea! Resurrecting the Aermacchi horizontal(ish) engine strategy and putting a CNG (or propane) tank above it. Emissions compliant almost everywhere. Still likely to get 50 MPG even on propane. At 4 pounds per gallon 24 pounds of fuel gets you maybe 300 miles down the road. Propane is plentiful. The good news to me is that an emissions compliant Bajaj might bring them back over here. Power available depends on if the engine was properly configured for the fuel.
Bikewale: Bajaj CNG bike new details revealed!

" Another angle shows a horizontally laid-out engine. This could be done to accommodate the CNG tank, which we think sits right above the motor. Speaking of the engine capacity, although yet to be revealed, Bajaj is targeting the 100-160cc segment in India. Apart from that, the bike is also equipped with handle guards, headlight cowl, engine crash guards, and a grab-rail too. These are likely to be added for protection as well as contributing to the visual mass of the relatively slim-looking commuter.
While the Chakan-based bikemaker has other products that cater to the rural market, the upcoming CNG bike could suffice the needs of cities with a large availability of CNG pumps. But this also raises concerns about the mileage and inconvenience of refuelling in monsoon when the rider has to wait in long queues. All these will only be known in the coming months since Bajaj is likely to launch the bike in June this year. "
