I read somewhere that the original Triumphs had vertically split cases, not horizontally split, and that this caused them to leak oil. Do the Bullets and Electra have vertically or horizontally split cases? If vertical, are they well sealed and don't leak oil?

Dan, the cases split vertically. My 350 Classic doesn't leak from the cases and it doesn't seem to be a problem in general, though others may know different.

Dan the old British as well as most old bikes with split cases leaked. The gasket and maching methods are much improved today. To find a modern motorcycle that leaks is a rarity, unless the gasket is damaged. Then it needs to be replaced.
As a side note: I've seen the insides of a lot of engines and Royal Enfield uses some of the finest gasket material I have ever seen.

Interestingly enough many of the gaskets used in Royal Enfields in the past couple of years are imported from the US.
