Title: jettin bar end weights
Post by: wildbill on August 21, 2012, 12:12:30 pm
I've been complaining for a while now about the severe handle bar vibration on my bike. Scott mentioned about gel grips and jettin bar end weights.
so i decided to give it a try and go for the bar end weights. i chose the extra heavy version at 15oz per side.
the fit was a straight foreward affair and a direct fit. the Allen screw had to be replaced by one a few millimetres longer.
took the bike out today on a 120 kl run and was surprised how well it knocked back the handle bar vibration.
although not totally eliminated it did drop the high pitch handle bar resonance to an acceptable level.
prior to the install i have never cruised at 100 kph for more than one or two kl without severe tingling/buzzing in the finger tips.
to my surprise today i sat on this 100 kph cruise for a good 20 kl.arriving at the half way mark i pulled over and swapped back to the original bar end weights.
back on the bike i noticed the annoying raspy vibe immediately. about 3 kl up the road i pulled over and re -fitted the jettin bar weight.
once again big difference and this time feeling more confident i took it to 120kph with good road feel and a lot less vibes. also noted i could see clearly out of both mirrors.
although where pretty good in the land of oz - not at the one time though :D
are they any good. my opinion yes. my handle bar vibration was very bad and this mod knocked quite a bit of the shakes out of it.
on a bike with just a bit of vibration it could do wonders.
will throw in a few photos tomorrow.

Good to know!! And the change back check confirms they do work.
Thanks for the info.

best of all they are pretty cheap to buy at around the $35 mark.
for cosmetic value the only thing required to do is to drill open the outside centre of the bar end to allow the Allen bolt to seat  flush with the case

I can second that...I installed the same weights last weekend and experienced the same results. I was plesently surprised at how well they did to fix the vibrations.

Be sure to use your loctite (blue) on the center bolts.

+1 to that!

I'm glad these worked so well for you.  The high frequency vibes are what really get to you and the more the bars weigh the lower their resonant frequency.

I also like that these weights allow for either easy mounting of CRG type mirrors or can be used as a tie down point.

Could someone be so kind as to post a link to the jettin bar end weights?

I did a search and didn't have any luck.

Go for the heavy steel models.

I'm gonna try them, too. Let's see how annoying it'll be adapting the Halcyon mirror brackets to these suckers; I may need weight screws 6" long eventually...

If the Jettins aren't heavy enough for you, one of the Vespa forums had a listing for some 17-oz.(!!!) bar-end weights from Manic Salamander.

Those are great too but they start getting really long.

I ordered the Kuryakyn gel grips, end weights and Contoured Throttle Boss.  I haven't installed them yet, but will soon.  I'll report back on any improvements they provide.

Al do you know where I could buy longer hex center bolts, so I coud do this and also not have any issues with my Napoleans?

Was wondering if these jettin bar end weights will affect the installation of Napolean bar end Mirrors?

Just about any hardware store, or Home Depot.
How will they affect the Napolean mountings? You may need slightly long bolts, otherwise, it looks like a slip on deal.

Looking at the pics, you should be able to mount them just fine as with the stock bar ends.  That said, the Napoleons give the bike a big wingspan to start with and putting them on the outside of a longer bar end is only going to make that bigger.  I'd say take advantage of that notch in the Jettin bar end and get something that will mount around it.

Old thread I know...I ordered these weights about 2 months ago, and after having to bore out the hole slightly, they work great.
However, for some reason I received another set of them in the mail about 2 weeks ago. I had not placed another order, so I called them up and left a message explaining that I'd received another set of the weights, and for them to call me back so I could arrange to send them back. 2 weeks have gone by, they have not charged me anything for the second set, and have not returned my call.
So, if anyone else is interested in a set, just PM me, and I'll send them to you. I think the shipping from Cali to Wisconsin was less than $10, so I'm not worried about getting any payment, but seems like someone should use these, otherwise they'll just end up in the junk.

The barends need to be countersunk at the ends to take the Napolean little end guide. It's probably 5/16" diameter and about 1/4" long. OR you could cut the little guide off the Napoleans. Personally I'd go for the countersink, it makes the mirror a bit more stable.
The longer bolts should be available at any Hardware store, if there not over 6". Over 6" and the suppliers are rare.

In what hardware store fantasy land do you guys live?!?  My Napoleons came with M8-1.25 x 60mm socket head screws - I visited all five hardware stores near me, including big-box Lowes and Home Depot, before I found 70 mm screws, and that was the longest one they had.  Not even close to 6 inches...

Mattsz, I also had my doubts about finding the bolt i needed to mount these at a local hardware store, so I went right to a place called Fastenal...they will have any bolt you could want..and if they don't have it in stock, they'll order it for you fast, (they did have the exact bolt i needed in stock to make the Jettin barend work after i bored out the end so the bolt could be countersunk, which was pretty simple if you have access to a drill press). Not sure where you're located, but it looks like they're nationwide: http://www.fastenal.com/web/home.ex

My local Lowes is pretty good, HD not so much.  Look around for your local Ace Hardware store.  Many of them still have the old time drawers and bins loaded with goodies.

Also got my son's old school Radio Flyer tricycle there.

MATTSZ, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM HERE IN northern CA. All I did was use the same bolts that came with my Napoleans, I just used Blue loctite and now they will not budge, solved my problem. My local Fastenal store said they would need to order it, and would take about a week. Needless to say the Loctite did the job for me.
Cheers
