Lost my front
bolt nut while commuting today. It's the big nut on the front mounting plates. Anyone know the pitch size? I want to say its 1/2 inch sae with very fine threads. My local hardware supply was unable to pull through for me this time and the parts manual doesn't spec it out.
I'll get a photo uploaded when I'm back at the PC.

The UCE parts book shows several 8mm bolts in that area along with one that is pictorially larger. They don't say what the larger bolt size is.
8mm is .315 inches or 5/16 for all practical purposes.
If I were you, I'd buy a 5/16", a 3/8" and maybe a 7/16 bolt and try it in the hole.
I'd plan on using the largest size that fits without making any mods to the bike.
The final bolt(s) I would buy would be Grade 5 or Grade 8 fine thread bolts along with a similar grade of nut.

Thanks Jim. I misspoke. Not the bolt, but the nut that's gone amiss.
It's that large one I'm after. Hitchcocks shows what I think the nut is as 1/2 inch, 26tpi. Never heard of a 26 tpi if this is indeed the bolt I'm looking for. I'd just swap out the bolt but it's trapped behind that stupid lump of the sprag gears for the ES. Ideas?

It could be 26 threads per inch.
The older British motorcycles used that pitch on many of them.

If the bolt is truly a 1/2" size and there is a way to get access to the shank below the head with a hack saw you might try pushing the bolt towards the ES case, grabbing the exposed threaded end on the right side of the bike to keep it from turning and then cutting the head off.
Once the head is off the shank should slip out of the hole.
Without the bolt in the hole, a standard 1/2-20 UNF bolt could be inserted from the right side with the nut end towards the ES case. Then, a standard 1/2-20 UNF nut could be installed on the exposed end.
If this isn't appealing, I would wait until some of the other guys who own these older iron barrels chime in. They may know exactly what the thread is and it might be metric.

Update: The nut is 1/2 inch, BSF threaded. In the end, I found the bolt is actually a threaded rod with nuts on both sides; could have easily slid it out and placed with metric of UNF. Nxxt time... I found the hardware at a shop called Morries PLace, in Ringwood IL. Vintage European bike shop. Man, its a candy store and I was drooling all over the place. BSA, Duc's, Rickman, Truimph, Norton, BMW, Laveria, Panthers, Matchless, AJS... the list goes on. Found a wonderful old RE v-twin. Im thinking 1930s.

I think the V-twin is from the 1920's. By 1930, RE was using the more modern saddle fuel tanks that fit over the top of the frame.

I have this expectation that I should know more about RE history and be able date this thing. It was a beautiful bike and I've a feeling I'm letting it down by not knowing ???

According to ROYAL ENFIELD- The Complete Story , Royal Enfield went to the saddle tank style in 1928 so the bike is older than that.

How did I live on the Wisconsin/Illinois border for 31 years and never hear of that motorcycle museum? ??? I'm disappointed in myself. Well, I guess I have a reason to go back and visit again. LOL ;) Where exactly is it?

Born and raised just north of Janesville, WI in bumfuck nowhere Milton. LOL Spent a few years in the Great Northwoods, moved out to Denver 4 1/2 years ago. Lived in Rockford for a coupe years too. Looks like that shop is over by Woodstock and Crystal Lake?

You know..... Come to think of it, I may have a warrant in the state of IL for an unpaid ticket from a couple of years before I moved to Denver. And I'm not completely sure when the statue of limitations runs out on it. ;) LOL
