Title: Union Jack Door mat
Post by: TWinOKC on October 17, 2013, 09:04:44 pm
A Union Jack door mat.  Made in good ole India.  Just right for the garage.

Hmmmm.........not really appropriate for a doormat, if I had one, I would hang it on the wall.

The quality is not really good enough for a wall, they are kinda heavy, it would take some pretty stout nails to hang them.

Inappropriate is not a strong enough term.  It's just not right.  It shows a total lack of respect for both the flag and the Nation and People it represents.
How many American members would have a stroke if they saw an American flag doormat?

I agree with D the D - totally not cool .

You make a good point.  I didn't see any American flag mats there, wouldn't buy one if they did.

I don't see where it states made in India.....could be from anywhere.  Anyway this sort of crap is usually only made to order for large buyers like Bed, Bath and Beyond in the link above.......totally idiotic concept to have any flag on a doormat.

To play devil's advocate: it isn't a flag, it's a doormat - that just happens to look like a flag.  Is there a difference?

That said: personally, I think it's a disgrace!  Just like the "patriots" who show their national pride by wearing American (or any other nation, for that matter) flag-print underwear...

Relative to most of you guys here (from what I observe), my politics would probably be considered quite to the left of center and I still see this as a completely tasteless breach of decorum.
I'm not talking about getting all sanctimonious about "the FLAG" or any flag for that matter being a sacred object. I'd even allow that "the FLAG" can have symbolic value as an exercise in free speech in certain circumstances. But a doormat? Really?
That's just disgusting.

I agree with you Chuck D!
I too support freedom of speech through expression while recognizing respect for others is important too.  Not that I'm all PC or anything, it's just part of civility.

The actual Flag of England is the Cross of St. George, a large red cross on a white field. The Union Jack started as a British Navel flag but this doormat still SUCKS

This may be getting away from the main topic, but it's a real shame that "civics" as a subject was jettisoned by most school districts sometime in the early 70's (I believe).
I still think that there is a lot of value in shared norms of public behavior that stress simple politeness and consideration of the other guy. More to the point, (mis)using a countries national symbol lost it's value to shock a long time ago, so it's worthless as "art" in my opinion. Flag burning at this point can only be viewed as trite and unoriginal, so, what are you left with? Crass commercialism as in the case of the doormat.
Either way, it smells pretty bad.
Sorry for the rant, it's just the Boy Scout in me.
Chuck.

IMO, to offer for sale any flag of any nation for use as a door mat is the height of tackiness.  >:(

I think our old friend Clamp must have hacked into ERC's computer. If one of his bikes leaked oil in his shop he would tear it apart replace every seal and then steam clean and repaint the floor

Redcat I'm not that bad. Well maybe your comment is correct. My computer must have been hacked by Clamp. Just noticed I'm the only guy on the site this morning.  ERC

I can't remember if he resigned or was given the heave- ho by our host. He had a knack for discovering what pissed someone off and then exploiting it. He was a British guy who was retired from some public job and had moved to SE Asia where he sailed, rode motorcycles and drank. I miss him too

I dislike this kinda thing.
It is the symbol of a great nation,as all flags are to someone.
Of course, that is why these things are done,to provide an insulting object to some dunderhead to display for the purpose of annoying others.
To make money off of it.
And,yes, stating the obvious is what I do.

Agreed, And for those of you who miss Clamp, it's the kind of thing he would have posted. With an American flag, of course.

A little controversy is always a good thing. I am sure Clamp would be amused to know that he is still generating controversy here.
As I am posting this I happened to look out the second floor window where my computer is in time to see our 15 year old cat chase a fox away from the bird feeder and out of the front yard. Its like Wild Kingdom around here.
