Title: Slide slip? Rear end movement?

I'm going to try and describe what I'm feeling when I shift up or down on the bike.  To me, it feels like the rear wheel and chain is torque shifting side to side, ever so slightly, but I can feel it.  It's done that since I got it,  I kind of felt it was inherent to a vintage bike and not having ridden a chain gear bike in 25 years or so.  So, when I go from first to second and roll on, the back end feels like its a torque movement as long as I roll on.  When just cruising, it's not there, but if I down shift, it does it as well.  New wheels, new tires, but running gear is old.  I've checked the axle nut and  no slip there and when on the center stand, no excessive runout.  What gives?

I know absolutely nothing about the older models (Or the new ones for that matter), so this is just generic advice.  I think the first thing I would check is for loose/worn rear wheel bearings.  If you grasp the rear wheel at the top and bottom (or front and back) are you able to feel any play when you try to push-pull alternately with each hand?

Check for play where the swing arm attaches to the frame.   ERC

Wheel bearings, or hub bearing in the brake drum, or deteriorated swing arm rubber bushings, might cause it.
I'd pull the rear wheel and have a look inside there to see what's what.

Thanks guys.  I'll check those areas.  The swing arm rubber bushings, without checking, seem reasonable possibility.

His bike should have bronze bushings and a tube, no rubber bushings.  ERC

Well, in that case, he should check the bronze bushings for wear.

My G5 Deluxe felt very squishy(as you describe) at the rear UNTIL I GOT RID OF THE AVON SKIDMASTERS, got better shocks also & Dunlop K70's.

Thanks.  Yes, the Avons came on it so when I run though them for awhile, I will buy better.  I have a gas charged shock on the rear.
