Title: Gearing
Post by: Vitalc on September 11, 2010, 04:38:47 pm
Hi,
I have seen quite a few questions and discussions about gearing - recently Bradey asked about best speed/revs
I added this tool to my favorites : www.gearingcommander.com

Most data can be found in the manual - the diameter of the rear SM on the G5 is given as 68cm (avon website).
Rpm at max power doesn't really matter, it only determines the cut-off.

We know that max torque is around 4000 rpm and max power around 5250. so for active riding, the machine would be most efficient (happiest?) in the range between those 2 . - or check it out for yourself.

With the tool, it's easy to check what impact a different tire or sprocket would have.

cheers

For what it is worth the G5/C5's rev limiter is set at 5500

Thanks Vitalc and Kev for the info.  Rev info URL bookmarked and Rev Limiter revs noted...  The latter solves a question I've always had.  Incidentally, I love the 'thump' and the fact that it seems it'd pull stumps while idleing -- you can pull away from a stop without having to rev the motor so much just to keep it from quitting.  My Beemer hasn't anywhere near the 'flywheel' the REs have and if you don't rev the engine to start off on a hill, the dang thing'll quit where the RE won't.  Innnnteresting.

Ah well.  I also used to love the sound of my old Johnny-popper too (John Deere 'B'), and it'd pull same-size Farmalls into the ground!  ;D
