WD-40 is not very good in rust prevention. It evaporates too fast. It is good for loosing rusty bolts. Or prevent water from electrics (that is what it was developed for)

Discoloration of chromed exhaust pipes (yellow, blue, purple, ...) are mostly from heat and not from an external factor.

Basically burned chrome-oxide on the surface.

The bluer it gets...the harder you are riding ;D

Exhaust temp is higher right at the beginning of the header pipe. Thats why it effects this area most of the time.

For cleaning and rust prevention of everything chrome I use Nevr Dull.
It basicaly is a cotton wool soaked with a solution that cleans and also forms a thin protective layer after buffing.

Most riders seem to think they need Hi- Octane $$ fuel in their low compression Royal Enfields

The unburnt fuel over heats the poor exhaust valves and BLUES the pipe

Once I put race gas in my Briggs lawn mower    The muffler turn CHERRY RED      lesson learned.

And what does it mean when your chrome Royal Enfield muffler keeps showing spots of rust that have to be cleaned off with chrome cleaner and elbow grease?  Does that mean that it is getting hotter than 360 degrees?    ;)  Or do they just come that way?  ::)

Just as a little aside to the topic. There are a few WD40 fans here and I'm one of them. This stuff seems to do little harm to most surfaces and does a wonderful job of cleaning and rust prevention. I've often thought of wiping my (cold) chrome exhaust with WD40 to inhibit rust. Has anyone here done this and does it have any unwanted side affects such as yellowing of the chrome?
I've been spraying it on motorcycle exhausts (headers & silencers for over 40 years both to clean and prevent rust. I never get rust on my exhausts. If I spray too much on there might be a little smoke from the headers on startup, but it soon burns off. I have never had any discolouring of the chrome at all.

It seems to work on my bikes - chrome and alloy items regularly wiped or polished with WD-40 don't corrode on my bikes. Sure it appears to evaporate, but I think it leaves a thin protective layer behind when dry.
