Title: Couple of Conti 535 questions
Post by: foggy95 on November 28, 2013, 05:26:09 pm
Probably no one on this side of the pond can answer this, maybe one of our "Down Under" friends can.

Anyone know if the Conti is equipped with the same crappy chain that comes on the rest of the Enfield line? How about battery and spark plug, do the usual upgrades apply? No big deal, just curious. I guess we get a 'full sized' headlight, that will be nice not too have to fiddle with the 7" conversion kit.

None of these have landed in the US as far as I can determine... I will probably stop by my 'local' dealer this weekend, really thinking about putting a deposit down if he can guarantee that $5999 price. I have a feeling that price will jump up come Spring ... can't see them pricing this model below the rest of the line on a permanent basis. He offers an inside storage plan that I may take advantage of, being its the start of a long cold winter here. That and we're moving to a new home early March time frame ... smaller garage,    :( (but large walk out basement! :)

Anyone else here waiting on one?

I ordered one.  Hopefully the Continental GT will not require too many upgrades to make it more reliable.  I already have a 2012 C5 with an Inder sidecar  and a 1997 highly modified Harley Custom.  I debated about getting the RE Continental GT, Moto Guzzi V7 Racer, or wait for a bigger RE twin cylinder.  I really wanted a newer and bigger RE twin, but did not know when a twin might come out.  Well, I will have to follow this thread and you to make any enhancements on the RE Conti 535.

I am definitely looking forward to what shows up on my GT (tentative delivery date is January) and wouldn't be surprised to find the same chain, battery and spark plug.

My C5 surprisingly came with a 7" OEM Minda headlight that has subsequently been replaced twice by variants of 7" Adjure tri bars.

Did you both get the $5995 "introductory" price? I have to think that is going to change very soon after introduction - no way they can price the "top of the line" model below the base B5 for long.

Hope we can get the "Continental GT Cafe Racer" on the forum on this board opened up soon...  ;D

Yes, I got the introductory pricing.  I also got a refundable deposit if I should decide not to proceed with the purchase upon seeing and sitting on the actual bike (so it seems like a win-win situation).  There is a folder in this forum called "Continental GT Cafe Racer" that could accommodate the Conti 535 dialogue and maybe the administrator could move this topic there if he feels it is warranted.  I am still wondering if RE will come out with a bigger twin sometime soon.

Is the yellow color option available to those in the USA?  Nevertheless, I will probably still go for the red if given the choice.

I have one in order as well. Cali will get there's later. I'm ok with that. I want the zoomi pipe and the dual seat. so those are upgrades I guess.
if I put a 60 dollar chain or a 60 dollar battery on it, that's an upgrade too I think. all my bikes have upgrades. from my Z1 with braced frame, Dresda swingarm, Race Tech suspension, 4k dollar race motor to my BMW touring bike with taller screen and highway pegs.
my point is, we all upgrade or modify our cars, motorcycles, lawn mowers to suit us. some out of necessity some out of perceived improvement.
I think I can buy a spark plug when the time comes.

$5995 intro price?!
Christ, here in Oz they're listed at $11,990 ride away in Perth, $10,990 in Melbourne.
ETA is around January 2014 but aside from that, very few details, none regarding chain and headlamp.

Yeah, sometimes I think that even If I had all the money available, I would still not buy it for that amount. It is clearly a joke. Oh well. I hope they reduce the prices here. Rather import it yourself with all the paper-work hassle and what not, that would be still worth it and way cheaper.

Ive got money down on one as well. I was told that it would be here in December. We'll see on that. Im not minding to wait too much with the cold weather here. My last bike was an 09 Bonneville standard. I sold it swearing I was done with motorcycles and was content with just riding scooters. I saw the Continental GT and couldn't get over it. Had to have one. This is going to be a fun bike!

Yes. I was given the same price as well.

Chain, spark plug, rear view mirrors, battery, muffler will likely be gone well before I even get to ride the bike!  It is winter in tundra land and riding season is over till April/May  >:(

There's no way I would pay $11k+ for the Conti as listed here in Australia.

I'll definitely take one for a test ride though!

Yeah , I agree .  Way to expensive. Don't know how the importer can do that . Wtf is he thinking ? Almost double US price. If I ever get my hands on one I'm gonna ride it like I stole it .

I don't think the $5995 price was anywhere near the list price for the bike. I think some dealer is low balling the whole thing big time!

The MSRP for the Conti-GT is listed as $5995 right here on this site.  I would assume that will be the price since Kevin has it posted.

What do you think of the yellow color they just released on the GT at the Indian launch?  Looks interesting but I think I will stick with the red.

Yellow? Nope. I would have hoped for black with gold lettering.
Those heel plates will get first to be reduced in size, painted, or removed.

Yes $5995 is the official "introductory" price....my local dealer had the same price listed as well. It was on a price tag hanging off the handle bar and the tag was pre-printed from Royal Enfield.
I have a deposit on one as well. Dealers hoping for delivery in Dec/Jan. I hope its soon I've already sold my c5 to get one.I've seen pictures of the yellow Continental GT it looks pretty good, at least in pictures. I think it looks better than the red (but that is just my opinion) plus I think it makes the bike look a little more vintage. I believe a proper silver would have the same effect. I'd love to see it in black with gold lettering; it would look a lot like the Honda GB 500.
the bikes I saw in person did appear to have the 7-inch headlight. I wish I had thought to look at the chain.

aussie importer told me about a week ago via personal email $9200 plus on road costs. sports muffler is optional. as for the wa buyers i'd say it's tied up in transportation costs to the west side of oz.

I wish the Conti 535 looked more like ScooterBob's and GHG C-5 Cafe Racer project as seem in another post.  British racing green, emblems, and studs around the seats look awesome and more vintage-like.  I wonder which one is the better performer.

I want one very very badly. But as a retiree on a fixed budget, I can't even finance one. I'm putting one on my wish list, & maybe in a few years I can snag a used one. In the meantime it is not a punishment or embarrassing to ride my G5 Deluxe, as I set it up to be sporty as well as practical.  Those of you who can manage it, should try & buy one at this EXCELLENT PRICE opportunity. Wish I could!

I think the $6k price is appropriate.  Anything over $7k is, imho, asking too much, UNLESS the QC takes a major move in the right direction.

Like all the REs, it's a niche bike.  Even more so I would say.  There aren't many ways to get something like this, a newly manufactured bike that is really closer to a vintage bike than any other new bike.  It doesn't just look vintage, it is in many ways.  That's where some of the cost goes, for something truly unique in the marketplace.  On the other hand, if you're just looking for a motorcycle in the price range, there are many choices out there and if the vintage appeal is not tops on your list the RE won't be either.  Still, I think they'll sell way more bikes at $6k than at $7k, and I hope the price sticks and the new dealers get better at understanding the bike's quirks and being able to sort them.

A repaint on these bikes to any color you'd like wouldn't be too bad.  I think there are only 4 parts: tank, front fender, and side covers.  Pretty much anything would work well with the black frame.

the front fender is painted silver like the fork lowers....seat cowl would be the fourth part.

I would like to know what size is this new "larger throttle body" that they spoke of in the marketing text?
I'd also like to know what these "hotter cams" are?

And are these, and the 535 bored barrel going to be available from the parts network?

Ace, I'm not sure about the hotter cams or larger manifold - I can just confirm that indeed a representative of RE in India confirmed that the manifold was enlarged. For my 5 cents worth when I took the bike for a test ride I was not convinced. My 535cc conversion feels a lot more powerful. On the other hand the handling is superb compared to the standard C5.

When I put my refundable deposit down on the Conti 535, I was told by the dealership that I was the first one on their list; however, when I got the paperwork I saw no indication of that fact.   The dealership said it was the date of deposit and the date of the paperwork that was the indicator.  I voiced my concern, and the dealership modified the paperwork to reflect that I had the first option to buy or the first right of refusal on their first RE Conti 535.  They also said they expect it to be here in February.

For the people who are considering of buying the bike, you have to consider not only the base price, but also all the dealer fees and appropriate taxes.

I do have a concern that I would like to voice.  My other bikes are cruisers with a sitting up riding stance.  The Conti 535 CafĂ© Racer will be more of a front leaning stance and coupled with the larger gas tank and the shape of the gas tank itself, my fear that something on my clothing (zippers, buttons, snaps, or buckles of the either the pants, shirt, sweater, belt, or jacket) will scratch the gas tank.  I wish the back area of the Conti fuel tank had a protector shield (just like my 2012 C5 has two protector shields on the rear left and right sides of the fuel tank).

I have been looking at my clothes to determine which ones might be appropriate for riding the Conti in order not to scratch the fuel tank.  Of course, without ever being on one, my concerns might be unfounded.  Does anyone else has this particular concern (more potential of scratching the fuel tank)?  Maybe Royal Enfield or a 2nd party vendor will provide a means to protect the fuel tank more.

Maybe I'll have to  put on one of those clear plastic protectors that they apply to the hoods and front of cars.  But that would not look factory and might lessen the looks of the bike; however, scratches will lessen it more.  What would other people do and what are the other options?

I think that 3m makes a clear plastic "sticker" that is nearly invisible, and applies over the paint job in the areas which need to be protected.

This stuff is also great:
http://www.thetankslapper.biz/

Unlike the 3M stuff, there's no permanent adhesive.  It just sticks by static cling.  Very easy to apply, remove, and re-apply.  I've used it before and it worked very well.  I also met the guy who sells it since I needed a custom piece for my bike and he was local.  Nice guy.

Hello Enfielddan. Don't worry to much about the riding position. The photos I've seen, the Conti's have adjustable bars, arriving in the tallest position, very similar to Home Market British Bikes of the 60's. You will be leaning forward some, but the wind will probably help you feel comfortable. The rear set peg position may require the most adjustment.
SCRATCHING the TANK depends somewhat on your build. If you are trim you won't rub the tank as much as a more portly person. If you consider what your wearing, & exercise normal care you should be OK. I changed out the metal buckles on my motorcycle jackets for leather covered buckles, & a Plastic buckle on my wax cottons. I even wear a leather covered buckle around all my machinery & projects.
DON'T LET ANYBODY ELSE RIDE YOUR BIKE. I let another Ural owner ride the Ural I built up, the A.Hole left his jacket unzipped, & the dangling metal zipper tab scratched the stew out of my NEW TANK. Never get to old to learn I guess.
Hope you enjoy the new bike. please pretend you are me while riding it.
THANKS, Craig

both you and i will have the very first bikes in different countries ;).  i did a verbal order on purchase with the aust dealership over 12 months ago and paid the $1k deposit about 2 months back.
told them i don't care about demo rides just ring me when it arrives and will pick it up.
when my deposit was placed the bike was suppose to be here in december but a few probs with the compliance on the bike and the delivery date was re scheduled to mid feb.
from what ive read i wouldn't be too concerned about a bit of a paint scratch - i'd be more concerned about the vibration shaking us off the bike  ;)
after i get mine if the vibs are too bad i will keep it as a looker after all it is a great looking bike and although i shouldn't say it - i will brobably buy another c5.......number 3  and 3rd time lucky ???

Wildbill, I won't have the first bike in my country (USA).  I will have the first bike from that particular dealership.  Since there are only two dealership in my state (Colorado) and this one is the bigger of the two, it will probably be one of the first ones to come to this state.

I am a bit anal when it comes to my toys, I keep them for a  long time, and as clean and sparklely as possible; therefore, a potential of a scratch worries me so I want to take whatever action to mitigate/lessen that possibility.  Nevertheless, I still want to drive/ride them and enjoy them as much as possible.  And if a scratch should happen then so be it; however, I had better take the right precautions before.

The riding position is pretty forgiving I'd say. I haven't ridden it but sat on it and it felt okay. Yes, if someone has extra girth around the waist, they can simply rest it on the tank wearing appropriate clothing :P

Here's a pic off the net showing the not so aggressive riding posture:

About the 3M Clear Bras.......  They definitely have a list of pros and cons.  I personally don't care for them and feel they cause more of a head ache than what it's really worth.

PROS:

1. It does protect against rock chips and most scratches.
2. It is nearly invisible.

CONS:
1. Not very UV resistant.  If your car is not kept in a garage, the clear bra will still start breaking down, drying out, cracking and splitting making it nearly impossible to remove without having to repaint that part of the vehicle.  I have seen this will happen in as short as 5 years old.
2. It is quite expensive and CRAZY expensive to have someone install it.  If you've never done window tint or vinyl graphics before don't even ATTEMPT to install it yourself.
3. If your vehicle needs collision repair work down the road you could be charged an additional labor fee just to have the clear bra removed to have the repair work done.  For example, I charge a minimum of $100 and up to $250 to remove a clear bra.
4. They look like absolute crap after the vinyl has started to break down and no longer becomes effective.  Once it has reached this point of aging it takes approximately 2-3 hours to remove, and as I previously stated, it becomes nearly impossible to remove without damaging the paint.
5. If a big enough rock (or whatever) hits the clear bra and tears it, that tear will collect every bit of dirt and moisture in comes in contact with and will eventually start staining the paint underneath.

I am at the most 5' 7".  Being a bit undersize, I will have contact with more area of the fuel tank.

And if any of us (probably all of us  :) ) want to skirt the limits of how fast the bike will go (of course, after being properly broken in), we will have more contact with the said fuel tank being in a more prone position.  And if the bike is modified to go after the ton, then probably even more contact.

Speaking of modifications: 1.) Will the bike come standard with the higher performance exhaust that some articles are writing about or will it be an accessory that we can buy afterwards?  I am not referring to the fact that the factory exhaust will already have a better flowing exhaust than the other RE lineup.  Of course, with any extra funds, one can sooner or later, buy probably any go-fast upgrade.  2.) Will the seat be leather or vinyl material.  3.) I wonder what mods ACE, Hitchcocks, and other companies will have as go-fast and look-dandy after market parts and accessories.

Yes, indeed, I will have to protect that tank.  So that will be my first modification to the bike...what will be yours?

For starters: Removing the centre (main) stand, front and rear splash guards and the alloy "things" besides the brake and gear footpegs. That should do.

Opticoating is another good method to preserve the paint.

Granted, the power plant is essentially the same design as the UCE, but being that it is a brand new construction bike that hasn't even officially hit the world market yet, I'd assume it will probably be at least 2 years before there are any real aftermarket mods specifically for the Continental.

Regarding engine mods,  it seems like most will work, although there are apparently some differences in a few parts like throttle body, piston, and cams.
Since the actual differences are not known to me yet, I will be interested to see exactly what was changed by the factory.  I expect only small changes in parts specs, due to the small increase in power output in this model.

Speaking for Ace, I think that our upgrades will augment the factory changes in most ways. For example, our rockers should work.with these "hotter cams" to make them even "hotter". The "bigger throttle body" will allow a higher rev range after porting the head to suit. We can just roll that right into our port work for those models, or any others with tha larger throttle body. We port every head by hand in a custom way anyway. No problem.
While it is a 535,  and our piston will also be 535, there may/ will be a need for one of our pistons, depending on how high valve lift is involved and what the desired compression ratio will be.

There may be a need for us to develop another map for this package in our programmable ECU.

ALL "do-able" for us without too much drama.

The warranty may cause us to not see any of these for two years, but for any adventurous types who might want to do some work on it right away, we could get right on that any time you're ready.

Isat on one and there was a bit more pressure on my wrists than what my Cafe Racer RE had. It wouldn't have taken me long to get usedto the extra load, though. I had to on the Guzzi. And I'm the shortest one here. I didn't feel the tank was in too much danger of me scratching it. I was sitting fairly far back on the seat. If I had slid forward to the tank, I'd probably been too upright to get a belt buckle into it. I can't think of any tank I ever scratched up anyway. I did have Bra on my Ducati tank because that as the Mode O' Day back then.

Anyone know if RE/CMW will be at this year's International Motorcycle Show?  Anyone know if they'll be at the Seattle one?  They made just a few of the biggest locations last year, not Seattle sadly :(

They were at LA. Kevin didn't say where they were going from here, however they didn't show up on the preshow list of exhibitors here, otehr than asking the local dealers, I don't know how else you can find out.

Right, last year I saw they were on the LA and a few other show lists and NOT on Seattle, so I figured they weren't coming to me, which they didn't.  But I'm wondering if they're going anywhere this year.

I have seen a few posts where guys have ordered a continental. For those that have, were you able to order the upgraded exhaust and bar end mirrors, and if so how much are they. Also i think I know the answer, but when can we get one?!

I was just at my local dealer.  They placed orders for a few last year.  They're still waiting and they still don't have a firm delivery date.

I talked with my dealer about this the other day. On the bar end mirrors he said he was hopeful but won't really know until they open the first crate. He said the muffler should be here in January and some of the apparel and helmets in February.

been without a bike now for about 2 months...days get boring!

I made it to 4 months before I couldn't stand it any more, hence the Guzzi. It would have been over a year and over 9000 miles of riding that I would have missed if I were still waiting! After the Goose, I doubt that I will come back!
