Title: I found a near new 09 Bullet
Post by: Techmaven on March 22, 2013, 11:04:12 pm
Bike has 142 miles..is this the AVL engine? Could someone give me pros and cons of this bike in contrast to Iron Barrel Enfields? Durability, mileage, What might be a good price etc.    8)

Most likely either an AVL or UCE
The AVL was imported to the states in '09 and the UCE was launched here in spring of the same year.

Chances are super super duper slim that it could be an Iron Barrel.
Those were discontinued in late February 2008. I heard an unsubstantiated rumor only once of an I.B. titled as an '09

In summer of '09 I saw the I.B. the AVL and the UCE on the same showroom floor. It was cool.

To help you identify which engine powers it, here are some pics.

UCE

Iron Barrel engine on the left and AVL on the right.

Thanks for the pics, Ice...To quote an older post of yours, which was a big help in case it IS an AVL:

Mmmmm,,,,AVL goodness

Shaft mounted rockers. Quench chamber head. CV carb. Alloy cylinder. Modern Piston. Full roller crank of pressed up construction with forged steel con rod riding on needle roller bearings on a 30 mm crank pin. Cams mounted on adjustable spindles for quieter operation. Gear type oil pumps (pumps over 4x the oil volume of Iron Barrel plunger pumps) Electronic Ignition. The engine was designed and built to cruise at 60-65 all day.

Interestingly the AVL uses the same basic crank case castings as the Iron Barrel engine. With some machine work they could be interchanged.

The 5 speed Iron Barrels and the AVL use the same transmission and clutch.
IIRC the UCE uses the I.B./AVL 5 speed internals but with the shafts stacked vertically instead of horizontally like the I.B. and AVL. BTW parts and service are still available and should be for a long time.

Disc brake kits are available last time I checked. I think it is a worthwhile mod.

I own and ride and Iron Barrel and can report that my drum brakes are indeed  adequate within its envelope.

I have test ridden a UCE and can report that the front disc brake on them is a definite improvement over the drum brakes. The disc set up offers a better lever feel, shorter stopping distance and are fade free.

Since the Bullet in the pics is an AVL Classic (A.K.A. AVL Bullet) and not and ElectraX, all the accessories ( other than engine parts ) for an Iron Barrel Bullet will bolt right on.

If you don't want it I call DIBBS !   ;)

The AVL's got Japanese Denso electrickuls and If I am not mistaken the disc brakes are by Brembo.

Would $2999 be a good price for this? Almost no miles..I wonder about it sitting for so long.

It's junk. Send it to me and I'll see to it that is properly REcycled.  ;)  8)

All kidding aside let me know if you decide to pass on it I'll take it.
Unless it was left outside with out cover 3k is a good deal IMHO.

If you can get it for less by all means do so..that's just more funds available for gear and supplies.

If in good shape, make sure to break it in.

I have an '09, 7500 miles so far, no major problems. Reliable daily rider. Study all the posts carefully, especially engine breathing. Would buy it again

There's no reason why an AVL shouldn't see you through many miles.

Mods worth looking at are:
TCI Update (this should take some pressure off the sprag clutch)
PAV / Exhaust (this will improve the performance a little)
Rear Brake (this will take the spring out of the rear brake)
Oil Breather (this should prevent the collection of non-edible mayonaise)

Back from vacation..trying to decide whether I want to buy a bike sight unseen..It does say Electra on the side covers if that makes a difference in specifications.

Electra has disc front brake and a slightly different frame than the old Iron Barrel models.
The "AVL Classic" had drum front brake.

I contacted the dealer and will know more tomorrow...Ace, what is your opinion of the blueing on the head pipe? Or am I just being too critical?

The bluing on the pipe is some of the worst that I have ever seen.
It is in dire need of a proper tune up.
It is unlikely that it was seriously damaged internally in just 142 miles, even with bad enough tuning to blue the pipe like that.  But, it should be tuned correctly right away.

Thanks, Ace. I really wonder if I'm being a PITA but I don't want, nor can afford a bad purchase. Thanks to all on the forum who have been patient with my questions. :)

I just found the pic shown below for $2500 with 900 miles. Again, quite far away.. I may just say the heck with it and get it shipped.

That's it...I already let one get away..this one is still there at an attractive price. Who can recommend a reliable shipping firm for bikes. I can't take it anymore!! I need an Enfield!

That's your ticket.
Nice late model with a 5 speed gearbox. Good year.

Agree with Ace. Not a bad price. Have it checked out and buy it. A lot more Improvement and custom stuff out there for the Iron barrel than the Avl.   ERC
