Bullet with the UCE engine / Re: B5 Burning oil like no tomorrow.
« Last Post by gizzo on Today at 12:02:15 am »

If it were me, I'd pull off the muffler and look for signs of oil. If it's using as much as he says and it's not gushering out on the ground it's got to be leaving through the combustion chamber. As a last thought, I don't know how the breathers are plumbed on these bikes, but I've seen plenty of "windy" engines that ran fine and had okay compression and still pressurized the crankcase enough to force oil out the breather and into the inlet tract.

I would look there too. A while back, my 535 CGT started using oil. Not a huge amount of smoke but a little bit. The exhaust valve stem seal had come adrift and ridden up the stem. Oil was pouring down the guide and straight into the exhaust port. Lots of oil inside the muffler.

I thought for a second that you were showing us a modern update of the "Team Boat", which used horses on a treadmill as the source of motive power.

The diagram is off hitchcocks parts books.

If that washer is missing, not only will your needle jet be loose but the main jet will be sitting a good 2mm higher than it should be and may not be sealing properly against the passageway. This may well be your problem. If not all of it, at least part of it.

Your right ..... I wondered what the brass washer was for, that came in the rebuild kit, I havn't one, which makes it move up a bit.
its got the choke rebuild bit in the kit too. So will put that right tomorrow, along with your previous advice.
Also noticed the float bowl breather/overflow is capped off, surely that didnt help.
Where is that diagram from then?

cheers

I noticed the needle jet doesnt fit tight and moves up slightly too.

That'll be the problem then.

They have a locating groove that engages with a pin, if it doesn't, it can be sitting too high. There is also a brass washer between the main jet and the jet needle, i wonder if it's missing? Without it, the jet needle will never pull down into place properly.

Some gearbox problems occurred on some motorbikes produced until 2012, subsequently some modifications were made (anti skip mechanism) which should have resolved them.
My 2010 Bullet, even though it has exceeded 30,000 km, occasionally continues to go into neutral while driving

Well I have gone through everthing again and checked. I am happy with the electrics and i have checked timing a few times. So now Carb wise I have put back to how it was so currently it is:

                     Main Jet 120
                     Pilot Jet 25
                     Needle Jet 08 (standard)
Throttle Needle position 2 (from the bottom)
                     Throttle slide is 2.5

Now it ticks over fine. When I put some throttle on, it misses and i am sure its puffing out slight black smoke (hard to see). Wish i could upload videos on here. Doesnt seem to like it.

Note: when i added a 130 jet and 30 pilot and the P2 needle jet, it was alot worse and wouldnt tick over at all. But i think I added too many varients to quick.

So what would you try next? Do you think? or shall i just play with it one step at a time starting with throttle needle. Had a rebuild kit come just now also.

Thoughts gents? ( or shall I put it in my van and bring it to one of your houses lol..... )

Put the throttle needle in position 3, didnt seem to make a lot of differance.
Changed the float needle and seat, checked the float height per manual. Tried to start again with the choke and it flooded big time. Put old back in straight away. its definately getting too much fuel...... could it be the case that the carb is just worn out. I noticed the needle jet doesnt fit tight and moves up slightly too.

Mark your twist grip with tip-ex or a map pin stuck into the rubber and make marks for closed, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full throttle on the housing.

Air screw and pilot does idle, throttle cutaway up to 1/4. Needle jet and jet needle up to 1/2, Jet needle size and position up to 3/4 then main jet up to wide open.

Carburettion on a slide carb is all about throttle position, not rpm, the rpm is a result of the throttle position. To make any judgements, you need to know what throttle position you're at when things happen or don't happen.

And yes, change one thing at a time. Start with idle, if you have a good idle and can chug about below 1/4 throttle, stop messing with the air screw and pilot jet.
