How close to 300 miles so I need to be on the first service need to be? I’m at 200 miles right now, by the time I get back from today’s ride I will be around 250. I don’t have time to get to the valve adjustment until next Thursday and I will have to use my bike to get back and forth to work because my oldest son broke a balljoint on my Jeep which I also don’t have time to get to until next Thursday. My commute is approx 70 round trip x 3 days…. So I will be around 460 before I have time to do it…. So it’s either do it today at 250 or next Thursday at 460.

I called my dealer when I was at 250 miles.  The closest appointment was over 2 weeks out.  I had over 500 miles by the time of the appointment.  Nothing was an issue.  Just like any other vehicle maintenance, a few miles over or under is not catastrophic.  David

Holy of Holies…. Between filter and oil at the dealer is was over $80 with tax…… the filter wasn’t bad at $13.99 plus a free crush washer….. $15 a quart for Schaffer 20/50 full synthetic which they said is the oil the use on all air cooled bikes they service. Since I always use the manufacture recommended oil weight…. Is their going to be any issue with 20/50 Schaffer as opposed to 10/50 Silkolene?

"The good oil" is a very comprehensive thread on the topic, which can be found using the search function above.

Dude, oil is a sore subject on every forum. My question wasn’t about brand. Just about the weight. Using 20/50 as opposed to 10/50 called for in the owners manual.

Just for fun:

I used to live it in the south Australian far north. Semi desert country. There was a weird guy lived there (OCD, ADHD kind of fella) with a very nice 5.litre GTS Kingswood. It's an Australian muscle car. Very cool. He'd drive that thing until the odo ticked over to the service mileage and pull over on the side of the road, hundreds of km from anywhere, and change the oil right there.

You had me at "(OCD, ADHD kind of fella)".  Sometimes I dream of being in a desert or a forest where I could live a life of spontaneity with rigid parameters.  Alas, ....

Seems a strange question. You should use the weight and quality Jaso MA02 specified by RE. For more detail search the forum for the oil debate threads

Well….. for the valves adjusted…. Only the exhaust valves were out of adjustment. The rocker box/gasket are a bit fiddly for my taste. I had to enlist the help of my 23yo to get it back in with the gasket intact.

Now to the oil change…. Apparently my bike was just serviced by not 1 but 2 idiots…. I’m the chief idiot because I didn’t double check the other idiot’s work. I told him to clean and reinstall the drain plug. I didn’t check and he didn’t do it….. so I dumped 3 1/2 quarts of $15 a quart oil into the oil drain catch. I could’ve just poured the oil from the catch back in except it also contained the oil I just drained out. So my only options for oil was mobile1 or Lucas. So I bought the Lucas.

My 23yo son (the same one that broke the ball joint on my Jeep) is a mechanic and now I know I will never take anything I own to the shop he works at….
