I really like the looks of my Precious. Thats one of the most important reasons why I bought her. But....I don´t like the tail light. It looks like a red bread box.
The Classic, however, has a nice rounded exemplar and that black carrier it is mounted on is more similar to the ancient shape. At my dealders threre are a couple of originals lying about that had to yield to more sophisticated luminaires. How is it fixed on the mudguard? The Electra original has only one big nut. Maybe somebody has some pictures, that would facillitate the comparison. Thanks in advance!

The C-5 Birdhouse ::) has one bolt towards the bottom, through inside of rear fender.One small stud at top of light assembly, through the outside of the fender, to the inside. I would think it would be easy to install. You may have to drill a new hole or two. Not sure how the G-5 arrangement is.

If I'm not mistaken, you've got an older bike with that red brick across the top. Inside the birdhouse you can remove that light and bolt on a round trailer light available for $5-10 at any auto store. Some people here on the board have done it and it looks good. Or get fancy and go for a Model A Ford tail light.
I didn't like the brikc tail light either and planned for that to be my first mod. Luckily, my C5 already had the round light. I think the round light matches the look of the bike much better.

I'm going to replace the whole unit. The newer G-5s come with the C-5 arrangement and also unfortunately, the C-5 valve covers. I never liked the brick and the angle that it sits. Not only is the newer one round it has the more vertical face.

Is it more vertical or just mounted in a different spot? I saw the new G5s and I think they are a little more angled even though I think it's the same light.

I know that exact light your talking about. Cheap, nice and classic, Dot approved. Got one right here. It's going on my next Bike. ;)

DucatiSeattle has the newer G-5s and I checked it out. They're mounted in about the same place but there is a different shape to the attachment: less distance between the bottom of the number pl;ate and the fender, making it more vertical. Also, the number plate itself is shaped differently. There may be some drilling required as the electrics enter in a different place but the look is drastically different, much more classic.

Just got my G-5 Deluxe last week. Taillight on it is round. Nice. I like it better'n my iron barrel 'brick.' :)

I bought the LED taillight from nfield, but ended up not installing it. This is a 50's Ford replica I got off the 'bay. The turn signals are $5 from Autopalace/PepBoys!

Oh you lucky Americans! You don´t need any approval mark on your luminaires, don´t you?
Well, well, in Europe there are a few obstacles to such lightheaded behavior like going into a shop and buing a nice tail light. There must be an "E"-sign! The purpose of making our lives easy and secure unfortuntely has some lesser benedictory effects...It´s a kind of administrative friction loss.
While the replacement of the exaust systems is easy to manage for the bienal TÜV-test, the altering of connectors and wireing should be a lasting operation. So I´m looking forward to the new round tail light that is apparently standard now. Are there any pics?

We have those laws here too in most states but most people just ignore them and the police don't seem to mind too much, unless they've already got you pulled over for something else.

Yah very true.
If they can see the lights functioning as Brake/Tail they don't put too much effort into looking for the DOT approvals.
They are more concerned with Noise. Not so much on the highway but in town.

In New York they will only pull you over for it if its obviously unsafe. I've seen people with license plates sideways, or hidden under fairings, and tiny turn signals. Compared to them, I'm uber safe. I've upgraded my brake and turning signals to the brightest I could fit. My headlight actually dims a bit if I use my brake light at a stop. Probably not great for the bike, but at least I'm visible.
I was actually stopped for this tail light once. I was driving and I didnt realize that my rear indicator light went out. It turned out to be the harness had come apart (they suck!). The only thing the cop said about the brake light was that it looked "neat." :)
In these parts, if you're not an idiot, the cops are very lenient.

Not an idiot and respectful. If you have a loud exhaust, then idle it through town. If you run aftermarket lights, make sure they are bright enough to do the job and located where they can be seen. An ounce of common sense goes a long way to warding off trouble..... ;)

Common sense? Yes, nice idea, probable ancient greek. But every two years the TÜV-engineer tells me with a meaningfull face that having approval marks on whereever they are necessary is critical for my survival in modern traffic. Hm. I guess everybody has to earn his living anyhow.
Ähem..did I mention before that I´m keen on photos of the new tail light?

I saw the 2010 C5 and G5 next to each other at the dealer the other day. They both have the exact same tail light/plate mount BUT the G5 fender is a little shorter so it gets mounted a little higher and is slightly off vertical. Still looks fine.
