Title: Advice Needed, should I jump in?
Post by: The Garbone on December 02, 2009, 03:38:25 am
Ok,  this popped up on the search today...

http://norfolk.en.craigslist.org/mcy/1488242124.html

I figure I will be giving him a call in the morning.   I really don't need the bike but it looks pretty good in the add and I could sell the KZ to make room in the garage.  I hope the numbers are correct and the engine turns...

Any tips or opinions?

If it is as described, that would be a cool bike.  I say show up with cash and offer something under the asking price.  Can't hurt as long it's not insultingly low!

It could be a problem if it takes time away from other things you should be doing around the house, not to mention the money needed to get it up to speed...that's the negative.
Now for the positive, you'll have a vintage era motorcycle that you mostly already understand ....all positive if you can pull it off without upsetting the house.

I'm not sure the age of the 350 is correct. The toolbox in the photo looks like a modern  Indian made one. There is a possibility of it being an Indian cobble of the type we see on fleebay now and then.

Ahh,,   It is from India but the seller claims its a Redditch built import.  Tool boxes are wrong.  Says he has the original paperwork and import paperwork...    I think the solid headlight casquette was not introduced til 54 so me thinks its an Indian RE...

The price seems decent but I will email him for the numbers off the frame and engine and better pictures.

Now the question,, even if it is an Indian built 350 is it worth what he is asking and the price...  Hmmm... I am on the edge about it...

If it at it's heart it's a '52 I would most certainly believe it is worth $1100.00.  Especially if it has a title.  I don't know if that's one of the states that doesn't issue a title if over 15 years old.  Just having it make's it worth that.  You have to admit those aren't seen everyday.

My idea would be is it worth it to ME to have the sled.  Will.

If it is a G2 Bullet it should have reference in the engine number. The 52 would have had a separate headlight as indicated previously and it would have had the Lucas Magdyno set up for ignition & electrics.

The first Indian import models looked just like that one back in the late 80s & 90s. If it was brought in to the country by an individual, there is no telling what year it was made. I know people exaggerate about an item when they are trying to sell it and that applies to all people in the world without much acception.

I received more pictures via email.. I think it was built  between a 54 and a 59...  The engine case might have been replaced along the way and maybe the primary cover.

It does have the creased front fender that I believe was only on the 50's models have and a single shoe front brake.  I think the twin shoe started in 60' per the file I got over at the Yahoo RE forum.  The picture also looked like it does not have the Quick Disconnect rear hub, if so I think it dates to prior to 57'.   Sent an email and hopefully the owner will check and get  back to me.

Here is a link to the pics,   put em on photobucket..

That bike isn't even close to 1952. Or  54-59. They used magnetos and magdynos during that time period, taht one has a distributor. The toolboxes are wrong. I think it's made up of later RE pieces. Ask him what the engine # is that may help. Unless it's cheap I'd stay away from it.    ERC

From all I can tell from the pictures, I'd say an older India made machine. No old style Amal carb, no Lucas magdyno, no early Albion gear box, etc. The later bikes had a VIN number and the old bikes had engine numbers & frame numbers. The numbers will tell the story. The Indian built machines from 1955 to just a few years ago looked pretty much the same with very few changes over all the years.

All in all it looks fairly complete. If the engine is at least in good rebuildable shape, the price isn't too bad.

Well,  I was going to send him some money to hold the thing... I know it will be a money pit,  but I can sell the KZ and cover it so no big deal..  Well, have not heard back from the seller since we spoke on the phone Thursday.. I guess I could call him again but heck, I'm not the one selling the rig.  Either he sold it already, got hit by a truck or is just busy, I don't know,  but my fatalistic side of me says its probably all for the better if it does not work out anyhow...

I would really have loved to have set it up as a solo bike, if I take the pillion off the RE I have the wife would kill me...  Ho hum.....
