Title: kick starter went limp(my fault)
Post by: fzr400 on April 23, 2012, 12:51:25 am
today i rode 75 miles then stopped for 5 min or so and went to start  with the kick starter and it just spun freely! would not engage. so used the electric starter and it fired right up with no noise. shut it off and tried the kick again nothing you could spin it with ur finger. so i started it up the starter and rode about five miles and stopped.

tried the kick starter and it worked fine got home and tried it a few more times and it worked fine.  any suggestions?  ???

You weren't pulling in the clutch were you?

Maybe a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase would help.  If something is gummed up that may help clean it out.

I think my dumbest kick-start event was trying to kick over to TDC while it was on the sidestand and in gear :D

Welcome to the forum fzr400!

Don't worry about the kick start mistake.  I think we have all made some slip ups.  I was unlucky enough to get the only year of Enfield that does not have a kicker.  When I first got my bike I ran the battery down trying to get the bike started with the kick stand down. :-[  Your profile says you are a female, your are definitely in the minority here but absolutely welcome.

Were you trying to start it in front of some cute chicks by chance?  That would guarantee you'd screw something up.

I have to say I had a crash course on kick starting a RE and if my kicker spun freely I would take pause. Maybe they are nothing like days of yore but its a lot trickier and stiffer then the 1974 CB550 4 I had. I have done the same thing on both the cb and the b5. Except it sucks when you kick it and there is no resistence. Blah

i have to admit i would like to meet a female rc51 owner myself ;D i removed the kick starter on my rc51 (rvt1000r) as it  limits my lean angle :o   i always instinctively grab the clutch when starting bikes to make sure there is no supprise's. i kicked my enfield to life a dozen times prior (and after) without pulling the clutch but at that point i was very cold and think a slight drop in my core body temp (hypothermia) caused me to revert back to my basic movements.

thats my story and im sticking to it  ;D

I always kmow I'm in neutral as I have to pull the bike out of the garage backwards ,so I don't have to play with the clutch. You had me fooled with the sex change and the expression " limp kick".... ;D

Hey, I am guilty of being both at once!

Funny story, was going to look at a friends vespa small frame he was trying to sell.
Having rode alot of vintage scoots I assured him that I knew what I was doing and proceeded to try to start the little beaut. Now keep in mind that the little thing was parked facing a brick wall. When I kicked her over(giving her quite a bit of leg as buddy said had been awhile since she started) I realized that the scoot was still in gear at the exact same time as my head hit the brick wall!  ;D
