Title: Oil getting to the points?
Post by: solg on February 16, 2013, 02:43:36 pm
I have a 2008 iron barrel. I have removed the crankcase breather catch can pluged the hole at the timing chest & rerouted the line to the back of the bike.
In my Snidal manual (pg 204) it mentions replacing the CB shaft oil seal to avoid "oil getting to your points ". Should I have done this.

Only if you are seeing oil getting to the points.
If the points are dry, then the seal is working the way it should.

When I replaced the points with a Power Arc I did notice a slight amount at the back inside the distributor. Not much though.

a little seepage was the norm back in 2003 when I bought mine.
The best fix was to drill a 3/16 "weep hole" in the bottom
of the cap to prevent it collecting in there and fouling the points.
