Title: Engine Ticking
Post by: SimonT on April 26, 2011, 10:47:23 pm
Hi Guys...
Not sure if im paranoid or not... but here goes.
Yesterday i went for a lengthy ride. we covered around 250km over the day. Some of it was highway, some twisty mountain roads etc (some even in the rain hehe).

Anyway this morning i can hear a ticking noise coming from the engine. it seems to stop when there is load on the engine, but is there when im just cruising along or when the engine is idling.
I never really noticed the ticking before...

what do you think?

How many miles?  Did you check the oil?

These engines change the noises they make as they break in.  They're all noisy in one way or another and all unique.  If you're worried spin by the dealer and ask him to take a listen.  I had the asme concerns 2000 miles ago.  Checked with the dealer, said it was fine, here I am 2000 miles later.

Oil should be ok, ill double check when i leave to go home this afternoon.

did your ticking noise go away, or is it still there?

ok... just went downstairs and checked the oil.... all ok.
The engine is still pretty warm (stopped about an hr ago) and its just above the full mark.

Mine does it too just like you've described. If it blows up I'll report back but until then it is running 200+ miles a week and is currently doing it well despite its unique noises. ;)

Hi Jake... how many miles have you done in total?

id much rather the thump of the exhaust, than the rattle of the engine :S

Does it sound like this (FF to about halfway through):

You can hear it coming and going in that video. I posted this before and people seem to think its normal... I never heard it until recently too and I have about 1300 miles now. Otherwise the bike is really strong and runs great - good power, holds idle, etc.

yep it sounds like that.... :S

its hard to gauge the volume on the video.... but its the same type of noise...

if it's time for an oil change by miles or calendar, very well
could be that. check ur service records and be sure to
use a top shelf oil.

Does yours come and go like that? As for volume... its loud enough ticking that I thought a valve was hitting or something. It sounds really bad, but people assure me that some of the enfields are really noisy - noisier than mine! I'm still going to have the dealer look at it when I bring it in next.

BTW, mine does not tick after the engine is warm.. does yours? I only really notice it on cold mornings after starting.

As for oil, I've already changed it twice.

mine isnt that noticeable when the engine is under load.... apart from that it was still apparent when i got to work this morning, so it wasnt a temp thing.

oil was changed about 1000km ago

So i took it to the dealer yesterday, and he had a listen and said all is fine.

He then started up their demo bike, and it sounded equally as rattly.  I did the right thing sending it to them i think... just incase something does actually happen and something needs to be replaced under warranty.

Warranty?  All you need are ear plugs and a happy go lucky attitude. :)

If it's the auto decomp then it should be fixed. I heard the video, and it has way more engine noise than my 05.  After all, it's a whole new design, that's supposed to have cured all those noises of the old design. Hydraulic lifters, no primary chain etc, but that rattle is O.K? Why?

Mine does the exact same thing as in Sub's video and only has 200 miles. Dealer told me to expect it when I bought it with 19 miles on it. Said was the auto decompression valve. Waiting to see if oil changes make it go away. Other wise will just get louder exhaust! ;D
