In the hope of a better front brake I bought new shoes but now the shoe assembly won't go into the hub. Any ideas anyone.

Drum brakes have an adjuster that moves outward as the shoes wear down. If you don't reset that adjuster back to the starting point, you won't be able to get the shoes into the hub. Make sure that the adjuster is completely reset so that shoes are as compressed together as possible.
Also make sure that all your rivets and mounting holes match between the new and old shoes. It is also a good idea to clean/roughen the hub/drum surface area with some emery cloth where the shoes will seat and make contact. This will remove any glazing on the metal surface and help assure that your new shoes will break-in correctly.

In checking the faq on this Site I found a post that says that
the ridge that is on the rounded end of the shoe needs to be filed off. This seems to make sense as my old shoes don't have any sign of a ridge on them.

It may apply or not apply but as I heard it, back in 02, Royal Enfield redesigned the front brake. In doing this, they changed the design of the brake shoes a bit so it may be that you have the wrong shoes.
That might be why filing the shoes to make them work is needed?

That's what I heard also, but it would have been nice if our sponsor would have said something when I ordered them.

If you were talking to them on the phone I'm surprised they didn't mention it.
Looking in the NFG (nfieldgear) catalog it clearly says P/N 144275 is for "front brake shoes up to 6/02". P/N 145756/A is for "front brake shoes 6/02 to present".
