That road is called a "Scenic Byway" - US Hwy. 163 through Monument Valley. Where you see my Honda ST1100 parked in the photo is the exact spot that Forrest Gump stopped running, in the film by the same name.
It is an incredibly scenic area all around that part of Utah and Arizona, which I visited 4 times over 27 years with that bike. I used the town of Kanab, Utah as headquarters for great rides around the Grand Canyon, Four Corners, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Powell Lake and Monument Valley.
Anyone considering visiting the area should look up the Parry Lodge in Kanab as a motel to stay at. The property was developed for motel usage in the 1930's for the motion picture industry and was the away home for dozens of famous actors from the days of western movies. There are still the original cabins (updated) where the actors were housed and each one has a famous name above the door of one actor that had stayed in it.
I was in Fess Parker's cabin one year. There is also a more modern main, two story motel right beside the front reception and restaurant building. Inside the office/restaurant area there are hundreds of signed photos of actors who had stayed there. A real trip down memory lane for anyone that grew up in the era of cowboy westerns. Great buffet breakfast in the restaurant at a very reasonable price for guests.
At the back of the property is the old barn, where the horses used on the movie sets were quartered and it now houses a small theatre where they show old westerns each night during summer hours.
I stayed there every time I was there. Can't recommend the great roads and the Parry Lodge highly enough!
