I took the lockable sidepanel round to a friend's to get it resprayed. It had fallen off. It appears to be made of a large lump of metal and loads of filler and is unfeasibly heavy.  One would imagine that having made the airbox out of plastic they might have had the technology to manufacture a  decent side panel. Japan managed it in the late 70s.

I could remove my side-panel when in the locked position. I made a longer movable tag (bit on the inside, don't know what you call it), if I remember correctly it's held on by 2 small screws. The panels do weigh a ton.

Today I finished making a tank guard/strap. to my anger and dismay I jumped of the bike yesterday and noticed the tank all scratched from a zipper on my Jacket!
Was going to make something anyway, so this became a priority.
I will be getting the seat reupholstered next to mach the color. I also finished sanding and polishing the new guards and seat cowl, all coming along nicely...
next will be polishing the lower front forks, and fitting some Akront style rims and firestone tyres. Then a lightened alloy fork yoke. Want to get it in a local car/bike show by mid June.

I changed over the sprockets and chain to a 520. I'll add weight saving stats later.

Did you get the sprockets and chain from Hitchcocks?   I contacted Talon a few years ago but they replied that they didn't sell direct.

Got a flat tyre on the other side of town. I had to do a tour of all the servos on the way home to keep pumping it up.  Pulled the tyre off, there's a hole in the tube but nothing in the tyre. Think I better throw a new tube in there to be on the safe side.

Also, a dynojet autotune came for me in the post today.  Pretty keen to see how that goes.

I got the sprockets from Hitchcock’s. It’s a Talon.
I get an employee discount at a local mega-dealer. That’s where I get common things like the chain, batteries, oil and the like.
My local RE dealer is Cycles of Silver Spring (Maryland), a suburb of DC.

Thanks Guaire.    Wouldn't mind getting rid of some dead weight on my GT.    However at 78 I believe the wife thinks that I'm mostly dead weight!

That's got nothing to do with age, in my experience  ;)

80° F here in Waco today.    Took the GT to Walmart/Murphy's and "topped up" with 2 gallons of alcohol free gas @ $2.19 per gallon (regular is $1.88!).   Temp supposed to be nearly 40° lower tomorrow!

Woo! We still have alcohol free as a general rule, here. Thank goodness. I've been fooling about with the auto tune on the power commander. It's made some fairly obvious fuelling changes already and runs different. The 60 kph at 3000 rpm herky jerky seems to have cleared up.

I went shopping!
What with covid-19 and all the self isolation I was having a need to feel alive. Put the mower away grabbed my helmet and headed for the hills. I figured I needed some supplies so stuffed some bags in my panniers and rode west. I think a lone person on a bike would not be infecting or getting infected by anyone.
What a joy. Took me back to my youth with so few cars to hold me up. My wee trip down the road to the shops was becoming such fun. With empty roads  everywhere I really enjoyed the rolling hills and bend swinging and the air on my face. So much so I rode past quite a few shops and when I did finally pull in to a supermarket the queue was so long with all the 2 meter gaps it went clear round the building. One look and I rode straight back out and headed home. I stopped  at a village shop for my supplies. One out, one in,  got my food after working out the "How do you pay standing behind this line in front of the counter" protocol. Back on the bike for the final stretch home. Checked to trip 50 miles. Damn if only all shopping trips were as good.

I am still amazed that people are willing to stand in a long queue outside the store, while being metered-in, in order to shop at a Safeway.   ::)
