"melting and burning"?
Do you mean the wires are actually melting (melted)?
Or do you mean the wires are getting Hot & the InsuLation is melting?
What have you been doing lately? What's different now than when the wires were NOT melting? Is the battery up? And don't say "well, the horn blows". I mean UP. Fully charged. How old is it? Do you use the starter a lot in relation to miles ridden?
A low battery will screw up a starter faster than the guvmint ;)(http://)

Disconnect the heavy wire from the starter solonoid to the electric starter motor making sure the connector doesn't contact anything on the engine or frame.
Try pushing the electric starter button to start the engine.
If the battery wires suddenly get hot, the soloniod has a short to ground in it.
Get a volt/amp multimeter and test the resistance between the heavy connector on the starter motor to the engine or negative terminal on the battery.
It should show some resistance. The amount may be very low but some resistance reading should exist. If the reading is 0.0 ohms, the electric starter motor has an internal ground and it is defective.

That's not melting. That's all that Lucas Smoke escaping. When that smoke gets out, all those 'lectical things cease to function! You need a Lucas Smoke Replacement Kit!
