Title: Himalayan adventuring in South Australia
Post by: oldphart on December 08, 2020, 09:46:21 am
The first video on my youtube channel. This one covers a ride from Pt Vincent to Pt Julia on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7DuP8jovUM

I plan to add more videos covering the roads I ride around Adelaide and throughout South Australia. It's the first I've ever made, so please be gentle with me.

PS: is there anyway of embedding youtube videos? Or can you only show them as a link?

Nice work man. I am planning on putting my own videos up soon.

Out of curiosity, would you like constructive criticism or prefer just compliments? No shame either way, many times when I post photos I am just looking for some internet praise. ;)

I just played around with a few hacks and workarounds found "out there" to be able to "embed" videos in postings to this Forum, but haven't had much luck. I agree that it would be handy feature, but as near as I can tell would require the Admins to configure/modify the system to allow for it. Sadly, this is above my pay grade as a mere "Global Moderator", grand though that may sound. Accordingly, I have passed along your suggestion to the "Forum Improvements" section at https://forum.classicmotorworks.com/index.php?topic=29780.0

I am not a professional or anything, so my comments aren't meant to be taken as firm rules. But a couple of things I noticed in yours and my own videos:

Try to keep the videos under 5 min, longer and people are going to click away.
Fast forwarding portions of the clip, this will cut down the runtime.
Stabilize the video. Your camera work is WAY more steady than mine. But if you do speed up the clips it will get real bad.
More camera perspectives. I like the side of the head mount. It would also be cool to see some side views, rear views, chin mounted views, and different mounting positions.

I really like the landscape and you did a great job showcasing it. It makes me want to go there.
Great commentary both over the mic and text. Keep that up. :)

I'll be sure to post my video when I get it put together. Feel free to give me some constructive feedback too. Cheers!

Thanks.
I've only got the one camera and it's mounted on the side of my helmet (SENA 10C Evo) so I'm sort of stuck with that one viewpoint for the time being. I agree that extra view points add to the interest.

I was sort of stuck for length on this one. I'm aware of the time issue. A fair bit of it was already sped up. To cut it down more, I'd have to chop bits out. That's the skill of editing, knowing what to cut out (you missed the discussion on the galahs... and the holiday village... ) For example, the start was too long, but I didn't know it at the time of filming. I probably could have just chopped bits out but wanted to keep it coherent. In future I'll plan things a bit better. I may even do short versions and long versions.

The camera stabilization may be something in the camera, but is probably more to do with the camera being mounted on my helmet.

Thanks for the feedback, particularly being nice about the commentary (I'll be using that to keep things interesting in future). Looking forward to seeing yours

For sure man. We all improve each other.

I don't know what editing program you are using but videopad (https://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/index.html) has a stabilize video function that seems to work pretty well. But it takes a CRAZY long time. Mine took about 3 hours to stabilize a 15 minute clip.

I totally hear you not wanting to cut stuff. It feels like you are losing a bit of the story.

Do you ever watch ItchyBoots? She does some really keen videos.

Yes, I'm using VideoPad and quite like it, even if some of the icons don't make a lot of sense. I think I'll stick with it.

I watched all of Itchy Boots until a few episodes into her current series when it started to sound like 'just a girl on her bike'. Pity really. Maybe she's lifted her game.

My latest video. A quick run along a service road on Yorke Peninsula in South Australia

Look out for these service roads. You'll find them all over the country and they're a great way to get a bit of dirt time.

I enjoyed your last video in the post before this one. I always do since I can ride so much less now and get off riding with other people in places all over the world to fill in my down time. Don't apologize for any of your videos. They're just fine. A lot of Australia and NZ remind me of growing up in Wyoming which I now wish I had never left.

As far as Noraly and her Itchy Boots are concerned, I'm still faithful to her. I think she's an amazing girl/woman and I've watched every single episode of every series at least once and am very impressed with her confidence. I've said from the very beginning that we need more women like her here in the States (not necessarily on motorcycles) instead of the millions of "silly helpless people" we seem to have been breeding and encouraging and approving of and rewarding (and electing) here by the millions in the U.S. for the past 70 years.

Something that has become VERY irritating and more apparent and constant in this latest series and that she should be getting advice and coaching about is her constant nervous giggle about everything. She just giggles about EVerything now more in this latest series than ever before and it must leave some of the people she is dealing with now in these new situations with a bad impression of her that is undeserved. Her future is probably going to be in the public eye in some way and she should really work on the giggling.

Thank god she doesn't also stick a "basically" or a "ya know" between every third word of a sentence as is SO ubiquitous here in the US now. NObody seems to be able to start a sentence any more without a "Well, so, you know, I think, basically...." on the front of EVERY friggin' sentence. I can't even stand more than 3 minutes on the phone with my own daughter because of this. She can no longer get two words of a sentence out without a "Ya know" stuck in.

You know, basically, I agree with your statements regarding the mess that American language is becoming. It is especially irritating when I hear University of California professors who are expounding upon our politics or the virus future say the same words  every other sentence. I really wish our schools would teach how to read and write English, in addition to teaching to math and science, instead of spending much of the day watching movies like my granddaughters experienced while they were attending high school.  :(

Murray Mallee next time? Besides the service roads, in the mallee a lot of roads have a single track made by dirt bike riders. Local "land care" vigilante groups and councils try to intimidate riders to not use them with signs or obstacles placed across the tracks but in reality if your bike is roadworthy and registered, single tracks are fair game.

An adventure into the great unknown... well, a pleasant little ride along a dead end road that start on one of the Adelaide Hills' iconic boy racer roads.
Valley Road, Montacute, South Australia. For reference, it's about ten minutes from the edge of the city but it's right up in the bushland (as you'll see).

Anyway, if you ever find yourself in Adelaide, South Australia, the Corkscrew is a Must Ride. gizzo will confirm this.

Not directly Himalayan orientated, though I did ride my Himmy there.
It's the Kenny Blake memorial at Strathalbyn.
Kenny was an 11 times Australian motorcycling champion but died in a crash on the Isle of Man.
This statue is a remarkable piece of sculpture because it's made entirely of found objects - bits and pieces of just about everything. Very clever and more than worth the effort to go see it.

That's a really incredible piece of sculpture there. Very impressive and there hours and hours involved are plainly evident.

            Thanks for that.

All your other twisty, "racerboy runs"  :)(http://) on the Himalayan are fun, too. Now that I don't ride nearly as much (and it's winter here to boot), I get a kick out of "riding" with other people.

Jolly good! I like the Corkscrew. A guy I ride with a few times, he on a big KTM sm, he was hopeless all through the hills except up the corkscrew that he rode like a Demon. He didn't like lean angles but turns out he could drift pretty well.
The section past the big hedges, the people in those houses got fed up with motorbike noise. I think they are why the speed limits dropped to 70. I don't mind taking it easy past there if that's what it takes to make their lives more bearable. The second to last rh corner at the top, I don't think I've ever gotten that right. Steep, sharp, blind and armco'd, it puts me off my game.

I hoped they also complained about the cyclists puffing and panting. That's a surprisingly steep climb, even up to there and most seem knackered by that point. Goodness knows how it feels for the rest of the climb because it just keeps getting steeper.

Greenhill Road - Balhannah to Uraidla across the top of the Adelaide Hills here in South Australia.
Not a dirt road this time, but a good one for just cruising along or for learners to get some useful miles under their wheels. It's all flowing corners, nothing nasty, and very picturesque (if you're not looking where you're going like you're supposed to be).

Aldgate Valley Rd, in the Adelaide Hills - they sure are pretty this time of year.

There's nothing 'adventurey' about this video, it's just a quiet road that snakes through the Hills and it's too narrow and has too much foot and other traffic to go silly on, but it's a great little cruising ride.

In a couple of weeks when my shoulder's not so broken, if I register my DR, want to go for a cruise to Tunk beach? Beautiful view of the coast and not a bad ride in.

Two videos.
The first shows what happens when your riding partner pulls over and says: I wonder where that fire trail goes?
Well, we found out didn't we, complete with a couple of attempts to drop it (one of which is flagged) and the sound of stones bouncing off the bash plate early on.

This second video shows the aftermath of a bushfire we had earlier this year. Not a lot of fun really, this country was all thick bush before the fire.

The sharp eyed will note that I didn't blur out my rego plate. This was not through lack of trying. I finally managed the trick, but because the plate keeps changing size and angle, it wound up being too much for this tired old brain to master. So I gave up in disgust.

Here is the video of today's excursion with a mate from the Himalayan group... well, part of it anyway.
The track was steeper, more corrugated, bumpy and loose than it looks in the video. Watching the play of the handlebars in places is instructive. So much so that Matt plans to inflict it on other poor innocent members of the Himalayan group. The ride was good though. Much fun had by both of us.
A tip for those playing at home - when you can see my handlebars, I'm sitting, when you can't I'm standing, when you can't see the screen, I'm standing and leaning right forward, if you're looking at the sky through a cloud of dust, I've fallen off.
At the end of the ride, I found a piece of gum leaf caught in my camera and you can see where I collected it in the video.

A short ride in the Hills near Kersbrook. This little road connects North East Rd to South Para Rd and neatly avoids those tight twisties (that used to be nice but there's too much traffic these days) and the road works on the corner of North East Rd and South Para Rd.
There are quite a few roads in there to explore, which I plan to do in the next week or two.

Here in South Oz, the gumbyment is building a North South corridor that basically takes you from one end of the city to the other. This is good. But it could be better... if they'd done it properly. This is only a shortish stretch of the corridor.

The video is only a minute and a half and speaks directly to the sort of things we motorcyclists still suffer today.

To be fair, it's lovely in a 4 wheeler and saves time getting out of town. If your bike behaves badly, you can take the now almost deserted port wakefield road instead.

My Ducati weaves terribly on that expressway.

As a road, it's a great concept, it's the execution that leaves something to be desired.

My XJ900 hated anything with a vague like that so I can only imagine it would have been a nightmare on this.

Fortunately, my Himalayan with the E07 tyres I've got, just gets and excited wiggle going, but one of the blokes with me, who has more aggressive dirt tyres was so concerned he rode on the verge and wouldn't come back that way.

California started rain-grooving concrete freeways around 1970. Riding my Triumph Bonneville on its Dunlop K70 tires would really convince you to head for the frontage roads. Fortunately, the groove designs have improved a bit and only cause the front wheel to feel a little unsteady instead of making you feel like you were about to go into a tank-slapper.  :o  And the latest Dunlop K70 tires still don't like them all that much. About all you can do is to relax your grip on the bars, let things wiggle a bit and you will eventually get past the grooves and on to back roads, where the fun begins.  :)

My Himalayan isn't so bad with the new E07 tyres, but I've been getting all sorts of feedback on that bit of road, most people having far more trouble than I am. I suspect that the muppets here haven't done their homework.

Another issue with this road is wet weather. Apparently the spray can be 3' high (especially off trucks) and the lane markings just disappear.

Fortunately for this stretch, the old road is still there and, despite having a lot of traffic lights, now features light traffic.

My latest video.
Three of us, Matt (Himalayan), Deadly (CB125e) and myself rode up to Owen in South Australia's mid-north to see the murals painted on the silos at Owen.

Sorry, no Himalayan's in this video, just a Bullet and a Classic 500 with sidecar. But three mates had a good day out.

It did indeed. I didn't include it here because it wasn't a RE. However, I'm glad you noticed. The poor bloke isn't allowed to ride anymore (cancer) and has sold his bikes, so I thought he'd get a kick from that one... which he did.

Yeah, but you did ride past your Himalayan  ;D

Seriously though, sorry to hear that news and best of luck to Mick.

A new video. We're in lockdown here so no riding, which makes it hard to record new material, so I dug something out of the archives.

Thanks oldm8.
I see you had no screen on that run.
Was that before your Eagle shorty arrived?

Thanks.

This ride was part of the testing to see if removing the screen was worth it. I ordered the shorty (100mm) soon after.

The popping and banging was there, you just couldn't hear it very well because the stock pipe was so quiet in the video.

About 8 months ago, I made a video about my Himalayan, Gimli's Axe. Since then, of course, things have changed, so here I present a more up to date video of the bike itself, bearing in mind that the sidecar had it's own video a couple of weeks ago.
So here she is. Gimli's Axe. Older and wiser.

This video shows my first ride with the Sidecar into the Adelaide Hills. I'd only had it for about a month so was very green, but that will become obvious.
If you stay through to the end, you'll notice a clunk and a jerk as I'm parking. No, I didn't hit the car next to me, the dust cover came off my sidecar axle and that clunk was the sidecar running over it.

My latest video. Not a riding video as such, more a location piece, this time out at St Kilda, South Australia and the adventure playground.
Sorry for the bug on the camera lens, I didn't notice that until I got home.

Here I present my first commute with the sidecar. I'd done it often enough on the solo of course, but this was the first with the sidecar. If you think I sound cool, calm and collected, you're wrong. I was terrificated... but that's also why I did this during school holidays when the traffic really is very light.
For those who don't know Adelaide, this is the main North South corridor and in normal times, is chocka block full of traffic - much of this route is stop start traffic.
But I survived my first commute, got home safely, and have done it again since. Another step forward in my development as a sidecar pilot.
