I spent ages trying to puzzle out how they moved the gearshift on trails bullets, having moved the footpegs significantly up and back.

Close inspection of photos like this one led me to conclude, they simply didn't, and that they all land up with a bend like that in them after a few unintentional dismounts.

In traditional trails riding you don't change gear in the middle of a section if you can help it, part of the skill is gear selection so the gear shifter wasn't so important back then

I have seen a trails bullet (possible an Indian one) with the gear change lever grafted on to the neutral finder shaft  which moved the lever up and out of the way, I've also seen suicide shift bullet for a disabled gent using that neutral finder in the same way.
