My speedometer cable broke right at 60 miles. It was an easy fix, but I am wondering if this is common?

Not particularly. When you put the new one on apply some light grease or cable lube to the cable and make sure the the cable ends go into the drive and speedo without any sharp bends. They should have very little or no angle where they are inserted, and as large a radius in the curves as possible.

I went through two in the first couple hundred kms, been okay since and covered under warranty.

I have a lot of speedometer bounce after the first hour of over 60 mph riding..consistently. At lower speeds it's fine. I'm not altogether sure the calibration is accurate either..I haven't double checked with my Garmin yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 6 mph off..
I'm not crazy about the oil or grease lubing of the cable, I think it adds drag, especially if you use grease. I have said that it seem that graphite would be the lube of choice.

If you're getting a lot of bounce then you need to clean and lube the cable.

It's done it since brand spanking new.. so I presume it's a crappy design or the cable is flawed..still , it wouldn't hurt I guess.

Like many things, they are not lubed well at the factory. Make sure to clean off the inner drive cable and use some brake or carb cleaner to blow out the outer housing. Leave the upper 6-10" of cable unlubed. This is to prevent the lube from working its way up into the speedo itself.
