I need to replace my fork tube covers (the long ones) and I have a question-do I need to disassemble the fork sliders or can I simply remove the entire fork assembly from the clamp and casquette? If I have to remove the sliders are there special tools I need?

That’s a big job. No special tools needed just a bunch of time. The lower triple tree needs to come out to change the covers. You may be able to leave the nacelle in place but I doubt it. I had to heat the nacelle with a heat gut to get the steering stem out. I would be looking at a service manual first.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. I have both the service manual and the Snidal manual I'll have another look at those. The repair shop quoted me $720 for labor and I've got better uses for that kind of money.

The only special tool you'll need is a big hex wrench to unscrew the forks. You can use the bar that holds your footpegs on if if you can't find a wrench that big. It's a pain in the ass job but all it takes is time. ERC

I use a hex head bolt. I put the bolt head in the top of the fork and double nut the threaded end with a washer in between the two nuts so it won't drop down into the fork. Have used this homemade tool a few times to take the forks apart.

This is Genius!! and so simple...
I'm going to put this idea way up there with
Gedeon's bolt and cable method for replacing
the center stand springs.
