In 1998 I had $34k in my "from the ground up build" bike. (post#19) Sold it 5 years later for $28k. I gave the dyno sheets to the buyer, so I don't remember the numbers. But they were somewhere around 120hp and 105 tq. Moving at idle when I hit the throttle it would smoke the rear from 1st to 3rd and 3ft patch in 4th.  :D The pure enjoyment of riding something that I could easily visualize every moving part because I had connected it to another part as I cruised, drag raced or rode the Interstates was invaluable. The labor which was extensive was the fun part, so it doesn't count.  :D  God, I miss that f#$%er !  :D :D

When you build (or totally disassemble & then rebuild like a Mattel Kit) a bike totally yourself, piece by piece, you have an incredibly close relationship & attachment to that machine (at least I do). I've done two bikes & it hurts, almost like giving away your dog, when the time comes to let them go. I've done that 3 times now & am now faced with the same dilemma with my '08 AVL Classic that I have spent countless hours & great gobs of $$$ on. The only outside work done was the ACE Fireball head. I'll miss feeling those two previous bikes under me for the rest of my life & I hated selling them. I also haven't been able to ride the Enfield now for the 4th season & am unbelievably thoroughly pissed off about THAT every F-ing day now for 4 years!

Talking of hand built motorcycles (  ;D ) , Allen Millyard  is the man.He fabricates his own parts and builds some pretty spectacular bikes like The Flying Millyard.
He appears on Henry Cole programmes here like ' Shed and Buried ' along with other mechanics.
Don't know if it is shown in other countries.

Yeah, and he's a nice guy to boot.  His 2 stroke 6 cylinder Kawasakis sound like F1 cars coming down the road.
