Belay that last order.  I just purchased CMW's complete crate engine.  Guess I'm not changing tribes. :)

I was lucky -- CMW's list was $1,700 but they were offering 20% discount so $1,360 plus $205 shipping to Descanso.

I could have saved money and bought this one (https://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-Royal-Enfield-Bullet-500-ENGINE-MOTOR-TRANSMISSION/132772931379?epid=3023503986&hash=item1ee9e22733:g:4WIAAOSwRUdbkr1~:rk:2:pf:0) as I had all the external parts from the 2016 but I decided to help CMW clear out their inventory.  If you are looking for used RE parts, I suggest you check PinWall's store (http://www.ebaystores.com/PinWall-Cycle-Parts-Inc/Royal-Enfield-/_i.html?_fsub=10382984&_sid=12458664&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322).  They were parting out a 2014 and a 2017.  Nice people who answer questions in literate English.

Cool!  Is that a brand new engine?  Looks ready to go, with throttle body and all.  I wonder why they had a crate engine for sale?

Brand new in the box!  Including shift and kickstart levers.  Kevin and Tim can answer your origin question. :)

I got a great deal from CMW. ;D

RE not so much. >:(  But good enough that I'm not riding an MG today.  It was a very very close decision yesterday.  I had my checkbook, bank statement, etc in hand when I visited the San Diego dealers.  I walked away for two reasons: (1) while the MG weight was close to RE, the width was significantly greater; and (2) moving/replacing all my farkles was a hill too far.

RE or MG, either would be good. Obviously, you'd need to make fewer compromises with where you'd travel and at what speeds with the MG...or perhaps even with the new RE twin, if you're OK with being an "early adopter guinea pig".

Little danger of that with the likes of me. I'll likely never buy a new vehicle of any sort...Just not my thing. But an early '70s MG of most any type in decent shape would suit me just fine...or frankly its Honda GL500 Silverwing or CX500 emulations of the period too. They seem to be flickable and move smartly enough for my pre-geriatric tastes.

As for you, I think we'd all agree you're well overdue an unalloyed win on the karmic wheel of biking.
So badass my Enfield's actually illegal  in India. Yet it squeaks by here in Virginia.

Have I showed off the cx500 cafe racer I've just built? It hauls a surprising amount of arse. goes around corners and stops well with the modern front end, too.

I remember when those engines came out.  People were saying you can't rev a pushrod engine that high and Honda says here it is on our showroom floor and water-cooled to boot!  Looks nice with a low CG = high fun.

That's really lovely. If I'd screwed that together my wife would have to bring all my meals to the garage. I doubt I could stop just staring at it.

Makes me wish I had kept my cx500 back in the '90s.  When I moved here to Waco in the late '90s there was a local salvage yard that had dozens on CX engines along with tons of parts and bikes of all kinds.  Unhappily its now long gone.
