Title: Tires for an RE
Post by: luoma on September 12, 2007, 02:32:44 am
I am thinking about putting different tires on my Electra soon. I was thinking about a Dunlop K70 front and K81 rear. I like the looks of them and it would allow me to run wider rubber on the rear.

I would love to hear from other riders about the best rubber for my bike. I want a good feel as well as a good look. Also, I don't want to break the bank doing it.

In keeping with the British theme, Avon Super Venoms get good reviews. I'm going to put them on when it's time to change the stock avons out.

I've been trying to decide between the K70 and the K81. Both look vintage. I think the K70s look better, but the K81s would grip better. Kind of leaning toward the K81s at the moment...Dew.

I think you may want to combine the two Dew. The K70 doesn't come in a decent width for a 19' rim, so you may have to use a K70 on the front and K81 on the rear. There are some great tires out there and I still haven't decided if I am going with Dunlops or not.

I saw a youtube video on a custon RE that had the Distanzia tires mounted. They looked pretty cool. Not period correct, but cool just the same.

I put K70s on my Bonneville when I rebuilt it because they were more period but wore the tread off the rear in about 2000 miles.  Switched to K81s and they last a little better.

I currently have K70s on my Bullet 19 x 3.25 front and rear (although this is technically a front tire).  I notice that the stock rear tire for the newer models is a 19 x 3.50.  Do they have a 3.50 rim on the rear or is it just a 3.50 tire installed on a 3.25 rim?

Don't know about rim width, but from what CMW says, the Bullet will take a far wider tire than what comes with it.

The Bullet will take tyres that are some wider, but not a lot. The limiting factor is the narrowness of the swing arm. Anythink we sell will work. For example the rear is a 3.5 and a 3.75 will work, but not much bigger

Thanks Kevin. I have seen a few tires in your catelog that are 4.10 width, or 110mm,  which I think is about 4.3. Just don't want to run into problems when I go to mounting them. Before I decide, I'll check with Dink (Robert) at D&D Cycles. He loves old British iron and always has a pretty good feel for what does and does not work.
