Apparently a guy bought a Interceptor in Scottsdale AZ this past May and rode it for 13,000 miles around Mexico till the motor starved for oil and locked up.
It was Scottsdale who replaced the motor so they know firsthand what happened

He hadn't done a single oil change or any maintenance on it. The sump screen had plugged causing the problem. So, it seems important to change/clean that screen as indicated

I don't have the manual open and I don't remember exactly what the exact maintenance schedule is for that screen now

So the bike went over twice the miles before a problem, and no telling the clutch abuse!

Also, should be less junk coming off the clutch after the first screen change? First screen change being critical!

Kinda funny story from 1978 Klamath Falls OR. Little shop on S. 6th sold Kawasaki, Suzuki, KTM others

They had a new KZ 550 that sold three times in about three months. It would loose significant power when it was up to full temp and nobody couldn't figure it out.

Finally given the go ahead to tear it down they found a red shop rag neatly folded up between the oil pickup and the pan bottom.

Bike was finally sold for a fourth time to a happy owner, LoL. I guess they are a full roller bottom? Disgruntled Japanese worker?

I cannot find this screen listed on the maintenance schedule and you would have to remove the entire oil pan to get to this. It seems unlikely that this needs routine cleaning otherwise we would be pulling these out of modern car and bike engines every year. Is there a link that anyone can share for the RE recommendations?

Your logic is flawed! there is a clutch shedding junk all the time in this oil supply unlike what you mention

service manual page 30!

clean at 300 miles, then every 6,000 miles thereafter
Most likely a plastic part with a plastic screen so I'd keep one on hand in case you find a hole in it. Probably not expensive anyway!

you unscrew a few bolts, pan drops down between frame rails, do your service & reassemble

keep in mind these motors are all plain bearing bottom end!

also, this will be a pretty fine screen to protect pump and pump bypass seat.
if that pump bypass valve was to stay open from a caught piece of junk your motor is toast  :)

Somebody stole one for $5.99, they should have been listed at $9.99! Way to sniff out a deal Dr. Mayhem.

Thanks  :)

Will you be stocking the pan gasket 575041C also?

the shape of this gasket looks like it could be of a steel shim material and also double as windage control?

Does a bear s**t in the woods?!? I have 5, they aren't listed because I don't have a suitable photo. I admire anyone that makes a living in Photoshop!

If you must have one NOW let me know and I will turn it on.  ;D

Please!.. I'll order one and a few other items also. I see it's only a regular paper gasket with a complex shape

2 strainers left, if you want one  get 'em while I got 'em! The next batch won't be in for some time, probably around Christmas if I had to guess.

You can find them here

I know why I missed seeing this....the part is buried on the same line on page 30 as the magnetic drain plug.

In any case it is just a clean and reinstall part....no need to buy or replace this every 10K as was posted by someone. Pretty inconvenient to remove the damn oil pan though.  Will see what this looks like at my next oil change and decide on future frequency.
