Title: Anyone experience with a silencer mute?
Post by: Miob on March 22, 2013, 02:11:34 pm
I want to make my Enfield a bit more quiet. Hitcock sells mutes for this:

Doe anyone have any experience with these? Are they effective? Don't they restrict the airflow too much?

No, but the baffle shown just above it is standard on the Goldstar exhaust. It definitely mellowed the sound and I found no performance issues. In fact, I thought the low rpm torque was a little better with the baffle in. After 6 months or so, the screw that held it in place loosened and it fell out. I really liked the sound, so it stayed out.

My brother-in-law has one in his 500.  He has the upswept 1950s style silencer and it was the loudest silencer I've ever heard on a bullet - bang-bang-bang all the time and no fun at all if you were following him.

The mute made the sound much less explosive.  It started to sound absolutely gorgeous, like a big single in great tune, rather than a bike that had something wrong with it.  No loss in power at all.  It just re-defined the bike's sound for the better.

Yes, I used one in my Goldstar exhaust sometimes.
I think it is fine. It does slightly reduce the sound, and it will cause a slight richening effect of the mixture.
I would put it in if it got cold at night, so that I didn't have to fiddle with the carb.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I ride a lot on the unpaved roads/tracks here, I don't want to spoil the fun of people doing their Sunday walk by being really noisy. So that is why I want the mute.

I'll have to try and find someone with a creditcard to order it for me :)
(wish they accepted paypall)

J&P Cycles sell what appears to be the same thing for $4.99.
