Title: Neutral from second gear weirdness
Post by: jedaks on April 18, 2013, 10:57:25 am
Hello all,
My 2004 5 speed had developed some strange behaviour recently. When I am coming to a stop and I downshift from 2nd gear and tap into neutral, the engine revs don't drop to idle speed. However if I downshift all the way to first gear and then tap up into neutral, everything is fine.

I assure you there are no air leaks anywhere around the carburetor or burrs on the throttle cable.  And the gearbox shifts smoothly into all gears, no clunks or grinding.

Any ideas?

Almost sounds like it could be a false neutral.  Do you still have the LH Shift?  If so, could just be some sloppiness in the shift linkage.  That was my problem when I first got my bike.

Yeah that sounds weird. Maybe your slide is hanging up a bit. Take off the air cleaner and verify that it slides up and down correctly. You also want it set so it faintly clicks/clinks when bottomed out.

Thanks for the help. Throttle slide is all good.
I'm wondering about clutch adjustment? Shifting is butter smooth.
The problem is not major because I can shift down to first and then up into neutral and all is good.

The gearbox a 5 speed left side shifter, so no linkages to worry about.

I've gone months without any hitches with the bike, so it must be my turn! ???
