Title: 500 miles in 3 days...
Post by: Rich Mintz on April 01, 2013, 05:40:04 pm
I've set out on an epic (for me) 3-day triangle ride and made it safely through the Day 1 portion:

Day 1 (early today): NYC to Philadelphia, ~100 mi (done!)
Day 2 (tomorrow morning): Philadelphia to DC, ~150 mi
Day 3 (Wednesday afternoon): DC to NYC, ~250 mi

Day 1 report (NYC to Philadelphia): Beautiful weather (45-65 degrees). Left at 8:20, made it 105 miles in 3 hours including 3 extended stops to stretch legs and refuel. The ride over the Ben Franklin Bridge at 11am was glorious.

Route:
Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing
NJ Turnpike to exit 7
Cut over to I-295 (mostly because the roadbed is better)
295 to NJ 70 to NJ 38 (or the other way around, I forget) to the Ben Franklin Bridge

I did the highway portion mostly at 55-60mph, with some stretches of almost 70. Beautiful day, no trouble at all. The worst problem at the high speeds is the wind effect on my body and head -- I need a windscreen.

Installed a RAM iPhone mount on Sunday for GPS and it was helpful, though the glare makes the screen hard to see.

I also shot some video, which I'll put up tonight.

Day 2 was uneventful (which is good!) --

Philadelphia into Delaware on I-95
US 13 south to Delaware Route 1 to Middletown
Del 299 west about 5 miles to US 301
301 south to US 50 west to DC

I shot a bunch of video which (again) will go up when I have time...

Rich is showing us that highway riding on these things is at least possible...

But having grown up about 26 miles straight west of Rich's departure point, and having driven between home and Philly multiple times a year during that time, I can say that despite NJ's reputation, there is some real beauty between Philly and NYC, and some fun factor secondary roads that would rival any - well, almost any  ;) .  Check em' out someday, Rich!  You won't be disappointed!  And if you're riding only 100 miles a day, you won't even be there late!

You go, buddy!

ps: did you give up on your hand guards?

I'm just glad he was stranded with out the financial resources to get him and the bike either back on the road or in his case, rent a truck and drive it back with the bike in tow...No dealers in sight around me so I maintain my own machine from what I've read hear and the parts manual, etc.. You can get the rv option of triple A that covers bringing your motorcycle back to your house up to a distance of 100 miles (think that's right on the miles) but in Rich's  case he's too far from home...I have over 10 k on my iron and have never been stranded but that being said, I still don't think these bikes are  "bullet proof" . Glad to see you had fun, took it all in stride and sounds like you have it all in perspective.  Being a  former Philly boy, I love South Jersey and the shore...Hey Rich, glad you weren't on the beltway.   ;D  GM

As GM saw, I hit a speed bump on day 3 and had to truck the bike back home. Details here:

I had a Triumph Scrambler that quit on me more times (4) with basically the same mileage as my G5 had which quit once.
I was very happy with the performance of the G5. I've had several "reliable" Japanese bikes that let me down more times than the Enfield did!
