      Interesting read. Must have been quite the machine in its day.

       I wonder if the dipstick had been placed where it was in this engine if the AVL would have had a more accurate, reliable oil level check.
RI USA '08 Black AVL Classic.9.8:1 ACEhead/manifold/canister. TM32/Open bottle/hot tube removed. Pertronix Coil. Fed mandates removed. Gr.TCI. Bobber seat. Battery in right side case. Decomp&all doodads removed. '30s Lucas taillight/7" visored headlight. Much blackout & wire/electrical upgrades.

     Yes. That's the perfect solution.

      I've been seeing that method on custom harley gas tanks for many years.

       Is there a pin hole in the top cap?

Yes, there is. I've had to make sure the oil tank is WELL vented, otherwise it will force oil out of the top the first time I start the thing up!  :o
