Title: Charging system
Post by: mrunderhill1975a on November 01, 2007, 01:16:22 am
For the second time in about six months my bike quit charging, the
ammeter was in the red, and for the second time I tracked it down to
corroded contacts at the rectifier. Not any severe corrosion, just a
thin film. I cleaned the contacts again and everything is now fine.
However, is there a problem with the charging system that would be
cause this "corrosion" buildup every 6 months?

the first thing I do after aquiring any new old machine - or new new such as RE, Ural, etc.  is to go over the whole bike with dielectric grease on all the connectors I can get to, and also go over all the festeners with "green" loctite.

Ain't much more embarrasing than having one of your ridding buddies coming up to you at a stop and handing you parts that fell off your bike they stopped to pick up for you.  :-[

That would suck. So far, I have not dropped anything I did not see fall off. (I hit a rock off road, after coming off the trail into a deep wash, with the Ural, and the left hand muffler was knocked off)
