Title: Heat shield fatigue cracks
Post by: AussieDave on January 09, 2013, 12:44:57 am
The other day I started hearing a rattle from the exhaust and upon inspection found that the stock heat shield had developed cracks on either side of the tongue that extends over the pipe forward of the muffler. The cracks are about an inch long. Has anyone else had this happen? I guess its time to order the efi from hitchcocks, but to be honest I'm still a little skint from Christmas. Some wire is currently holding it in tension to stop said vibration.

Wire is good.

It has an 'old time' image that suits our old time bikes.

It also has much better heat resistance than the 'new time' duct tape so commonly found on the new bikes body panels.   ;D

Mine did the same after 8000km. There is a clip under the heat shield that clips into the pipe at the front end of the shield. My clip was worn off causing the front of the shield to vibrate up and down until there were cracks on either side of the narrow bit of the shield. I ran a worm clamp (like the kind on auto radiator hoses) around the shield at the area until I was able to get a new shield. The noise went away as the clamp held the shield tight down on the pipe.

Mine did the same, makes an awful racket.  I replaced the broken clip with a piece of bent metal.  I cut the solid portion from a SS metal hose clamp and cut/bent it to shape.  I also replaced the allen head bolts with hex heads.

It held but I have since replaced it all with a reverse cone Emgo muffler and short heat shield over the pipe.

no bs, what model sportster? I have been looking for one with the cat ready for it's smog (it will eventually need one) as the cat in the original torpedo broke loose , hence the change to the ElectraX short bottle.
