And it just goes between the shift lever and the crankcase?

No, it goes on the gear change shaft where the black spacer is, inside the right engine case.
See the photo in previous message.
Off route, recalculate?

Some folk have fitted a couple of rubber O rings between the gear shift lever and the engine case. Not sure how you would hold the shaft from moving back in when you refit the lever though?
Off route, recalculate?

I might look at that, I've got some spare o-rings and it can't hurt.
