I’m going to run some sea foam through it and do a oil change.

I bought this bike back in October and it was pretty neglected. The oil was horrible. Even after a fresh oil change the color immediately went black again.

So if the sea foam treatment doesn’t clear it up. Then a lifter change will be needed.

That's your automatic decompressor in action.
Nothing to worry about.
You could raise the idle speed a little would help.
Tickover is meant to be around 1100rpm.
I have mine set at just over 800, any slower and the decompressor kicks in.
Off route, recalculate?

Oh Thank you!

Oil change in progress… bike had 3k miles when I got it and I’m almost positive it was the original oil. I changed it and have ridden 200 miles.

There were no metal shavings in the oil this time.

After the oil change and sea foam treatment I have golden oil even after a 5 mile ride! No noises either.

Oil change on a new used bike is never a bad idea - you've NO real idea of what was being run in it usually.  The noise, as mentioned, is the automatic decompressor.  My Rumbler 500 did the same when new and it was disconcerting the first time or two until I knew what it was.  As mentioned, if the idle is set up properly you'll not hear it anymore. Too low and it'll drive you nuts.  ;D Wish we could get Sea Foam down here, haven't found anything like it on our local market.

That noise was super concerning! I’m guess because it was cold.

And that seam foam really cleaned it out! Poured about a 1/3 of the bottle in the crack case and the other 2/3rds in the gas tank.

It was disheartening to do an oil change the first time and see the $40 oil change turn straight black.

But it’s nice and golden now!

If you can get diesel fuel, naptha, and isopropyl alchohol, you can mix up a batch.

Naptha is sold around here as a solvent, and as a fuel for camping stoves:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleman_fuel

Interesting.  Don't know if we can get naptha here, need to investigate.  A lot of solvents are difficult/impossible to source here in Coffee Country due to their use in certain illicit "industries".

I have known those lifters to last a long time l doubt with that mileage might be cam backlash which is easy to resolve, right grade of oil helps and regular changes, of course all alloy top ends make a little more noise they always have done.
