Yea l remember that well l had a few bsa singles they rattled like hell as well, that's what they used to do, mind you the hydraulic lifters and backlash on the cams can cause it, changing the lifters out is a bit of a job major strip down, but setting the backlash is easy as long as you don't over tighten that's just RE for you.

Problem with the unc is the hydraulic lifters they can wear very quickly that's where the noise comes from these engines are not the best design..... require lifters changed quite frequently as they wear out quick.

I have to say, I've not heard that elsewhere.

I should get my bike back from MotoGB next week, engine noise removed.

Gold star for all those who mentioned the decompressor mech. Apparently the pin had sheared.

If MotoGB had given the dealership proper tech support months ago, they might not have been through the lifters/cylinder head swaps, and I'd have had my bike 9n the road all summer.

I wish I'd just fixed it myself.

Got the bike back today. Engine Noise is gone courtesy of a new exhaust cam and decompressor, and rust on exhaust heatshields gone courtesy of fresh powder coating. Celebrating with a cold trip to Cullen beach.

Thanks. It's been a ball ache.  A saga of incompetence from start to finish. I'll never let anyone else lay spanners on my bike again, regardless of "warranties".
Fortunately I was able to buy a 2015 B5 Bullet to ride for the Summer, which was a useful experience, and should be able to sell it at cost.

Congratulations for finally sorting it. I fully subscribe on the general quality of the "service" offered by dealers. I discovered that my dealer did not bother to clean the secondary oil strainer on first service, so had to do it myself. I still have to go there so as not to void the warranty though. But it is quite sad.

Mine didn't either. They looked at me dumbfounded when I asked if they had found anything in it. I re-did the service, with the strainer, about 200 miles later and have done it myself since. Kept receipts, in case I needed a warranty conversation.
