Title: 7" Headlight Conversion
Post by: sumeetanand1980 on October 28, 2013, 08:13:29 pm
Hello Friends,

After reading so many amazing posts here, I am on the mission to upgrade my G5 Deluxe (2013) headlights.

I have just ordered an outer ring from ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261078471519?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I am planning to order headlight either from SummitRacing:

or Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Adjure-T70300-Trillient-Motorcycle-Headlight/dp/B006XG5EEM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382991072&sr=8-2&keywords=tri-bar+headlight+7

Do i need something else? I read 'W' rings in other threads, are they required in the assembly if I purchase above 2 items?

I just purchased the kit that has all necessary components. I think it originated in India as the light is of Indian manufacture. It's of very hight quality, better than the original which was already pitting after not even a year.

Thanks for the post squire.

But my question is do I need any other item apart from the 7" outer ring and 7" tri-bar headlight mentioned above?

You will need the W clips.

I might be wrong but I don't think that ring will connect to you base. You need the whole kit.

With my kit I just received the ring, headlight, and W clips.....works and looks like a charm. The headlight is a Minda. Not to say all the kits are the same though.

On my 2011, there were two rings required to change the headlight to a 7 inch size.

One ring locates the actual headlight and is shaped so the W clips will hold the glass into the ring.
The other ring attaches to the casquette and locates with the first ring and holds it in place.

The link below shows the two rings and the W clips that are sold by Nfieldgear

I personally like the tripod lights without the built in car directional you showed, which I think takes a percentage of light away. Mine is all reflector but does have a pilot light I elect to run in daylight, & save my expensive bulb for dark. I cut my original backup rings guts out, & used a Chinese "CJ" Peaked Headlight ring. it was tricky, but check out my results. Many are not capable of doing this. You may need the inner outer kit.  but I'd hold out for the "diamond cut Tripod reflector" like mine.  See Pic

Awesome Craig! That is my goal too..

Can you send me a link from where you bought the tri-bar diamond cut light?

Found it on EBAY for under $30. Type in "Tripod Headlight, 7inch" OR "7 inch DIAMOND CUT TRIPOD REFLECTOR" & search Ebay & Amazon etc.

GOOD LUCK!

It could have been easy if I used the whole kit including kit reflector. BUT, I wanted the Tripod (I had the 2 ring kit with clips) Then I found the 7" peaked Chinese CJ outer ring (on Ebay). First thing I noticed was MY reflector was thicker/deeper than the kit base ring would permit. Then I noticed the stock base ring was a good bit deeper, but had lots of tabs for the DOT headlight & its adjustments. SO I cut those out with my Dremel Tool. I then fitted the CJ ring to the base ring, off the bike. I think I had to drill a hole at the top of the CJ ring & base ring & for a chrome locating screw & nut. I had to do a good bit of expert tweeking. I also removed the jumper wiring Pigtail inside the headlight Nacelle in order to be able to turn my lights off & on at MY discretion while I was in there & wired the pilot light & my bar end Signals.
All told I think it turned out perfectly. But for the NOVICE it may be to much of a challenge.  I am an elderly guy who's been building a long time & had the confidence, I aslo did have the kit to fall back on. I was then able to recoup my investment, selling ALL left over parts on EBAY.  I preferred the clean line of the CJ peaked ring to the Eyebrow add on peak. See side view pic below.  Go for it if you think you can do it. That's how I learned.   Cheers!

This combo worked perfectly for me:
I bought this ring set which is inner and outer.  The quality was better than OEM bearing in mind they're just stamped and chromed sheet metal.

Hi, If you are going to have a Tripod headlight, the Diamond cut reflector units like mine all have a thick plastic reflector, that is why I HAD to use a deeper base ring. since you are going to use the KIT, check out the Tripod reflector offered by MOSS MOTORS in California. Theirs has a silvered metal reflector, & is not as deep as the Diamond cut ones, & may fit your kit better.

Once you have any headlight installed in the 7" setup, the only mod you may need is to dispose of the plug that attached the wire to the headlight and replace it with spade type connectors. Some of the headlights extend too far back to clear the speedo with the one piece connector in there. Once you change those, just about any headlight or sealed beam will fit. Just a matter of removing and replacing the "W" clips

Just installed mine on the GREen B which had been on backorder. Haven't had the chance to try it in the dark yet. It is made by MINDA and the install was a breeze except the 2 side retaining screws from the stock lamp were too large to go through the holes in the new unit. One dremel later and i was in business.
My wiring was already separate spade terminals and the wiring was already there to hook up to the internal park bulb, pretty sweet. I still prefer the look of the Tri Bar that i had on the late lamented REnfield though.
Cheers, Robert.

Same with me to all of the above, Robert, except I didn't have to modify the screw holes.  When I did my LED indicator replacements, I got a white, single-LED one to install in that parking socket.  I figured the heat might be too much for it, but so far, so good.  Not too keen on the very cold, blue-ish light, though.  Oh well...

Mine is an adjure Reflector also. Exactly like the one in the video. I had a problem using the Kits rearmost ring, & front ring, & making everything fit. Especially since the speedo cable is very stiff & can't move much. That is why I started eyeing the stock(deeper) rear ring, & decided to cut all the tabs out, & use it instead. Keep in mind the Peaked Chinese CJ front ring, is deeper also than the Kits front ring. I ended up keeping only the screw & threaded rectangular nut & the clips - Rest of my Ring Kit went on Ebay.
A "C J" is a Chinese sidecar bike (like the Ural) the front Peaked ring I used is on Ebay now,
Item # 111115113046 for $30. + free shipping. I had to do some improvising & tweaking, but it worked out very well. look back at the pix I posted.  Cheers!

This is the one I used.  I like it alot.  Only thing better IMO would be a cats-eye, but, they were 8 inch lamp lenses.

Fort what it's worth; The Hella is DOT approved, is patterned for right hand side roads, has a reflector that won't discolor or flake off, and is of known quality.  The glass is almost flat, which looks very good on the bike.

Here is an other option, for those who wanted a TRIPOD headlight, but have only a 7" Sealed Beam or European Reflector with Diffusion Lens - Its an add on Tripod that goes on the outside of all types of 7" headlight. It's called a TRIPOD GRILL. Here it is on Ebay #11199691252  ....$14. BUY IT NOW & FREE SHIPPING.

Yet another option (but more expensive) are the LUCAS PL700 Reproduction TRIPOD HEADLIGHTS @$69.  & the P700 TRIPOD HEADLIGHTS @ $119.  Sold by www.mossmotors.com  They sell British Car Parts from MG TC - on, I have used these 7" units, & they ARE NICE!

EXCELLENT. Guess you like it. I do like mine, I have a blue LED pilot light, in addition to my 2 blue LED running lights(cobra eyes), & a cool blue zenon main bulb.
Natives here in the north Georgia mountains keep their eyes peeled for "Haunt Lights", which I understand are blue also & float along. this always gets their attention.
