I first saw a Messerschmitt in a Popular Science article sometime during the mid-1950's. The article claimed that the clear cockpit shell was a leftover from their WWII ME109 production pile of part that they could no longer use to make airplanes. I don't know if that was true or not as it didn't seem to quite have the shape of the 109's windshield.

I first saw one running at the tail end of a 1960's Avengers TV show. Ms. Peel and the guy took off down a highway in one of those buzzing smoke bombs. They didn't look very comfortable, especially Ms. Peel.

BTW, I have a model of the 'Schmitt in my collection of motorcycle models that I display in my dining room china cabinet.  Photo attached of the cabinet. It is green and on the bottom shelf.

The shop that worked on my brother's hotrod Hillman Husky drove a yellow Messerschmitt. Way too small for a plane canopy, and it had handlebar steering.
Some how it inspired my bro to mate a Servi-car and Isetta to make a four wheeled minicar.

Seems unlikely given that the front windscreen of a 109G or 109K was actually a very thick, very heavy,  slab of flat bullet proof armor glass and the rear part of the standard canopy was not curved either.

The very late war Erla haube canopy had a slight curve to the top of it but few were built and it is unlikely they ended up with a "pile of parts" .

The Avia company from Czechoslavakia did continue production of a modified 109G-14 as the Avia S-199 after the war with a curved rear part of the canopy but again their would have been no "pile of parts" .

Note that even the Erla haube canopy (popular among online gamers) still looked nothing like the post war car - see below.

An Amphicar buddy of mine from the German Club has a couple of the originals. They are indeed awesome. Did you know the first prototypes, cobbled together by a fellow named Fritz Fend, started off just after the War, when Germany was still banned by the Allies from making powered vehicles, as pedal-driven all-weather rides for the disabled? I believe they were canvas-covered. Later Fend hooked up with what was left of the Messerschmitt aircraft concern, got permission to use engines, and they took off from there. They used to race these things fairly competitively in rallies and so forth. I seem to recall a four-wheel model called the Tiger (?), which could handily outrun the hot Opels of the day.

If anyone's super interested in the breed and reads German, I believe I could dig out a nice article on them from the '80s magazine, "Markt für klassische Automobile und Motorräder" that I've still got somewhere, since it also has a feature on my Zündapp Bella scooter.
