Title: Decompression lever revisited
Post by: yoda_jackson on July 26, 2013, 01:43:32 am
I tried to connect the cable from the decompression lever to the valve that had been disconnected by the PO and seem to have hit the wall.  I can get the cable and ball inserted just fine and the adjusting nut threaded in but after that I have a problem.  What keeps the cable sleeve in the adjusting nut.  Is it one piece and perhaps mine broke?  Looking in the catalog at a new one is appears the cable and threaded assembly are two separate pieces.  Sorry if this is a dumb question but I tried searching the forums first and didn't find anything.  Snidal's and the factory manual weren't clear either.

Thanks, Josh

There's a cotter pin that holds the whole thing together. It's on the end of the decompression piece itself if that's what your talking about.  ERC

I have the cotter pin in there.  The cable itself fits just fine.  I can screw the threaded connector into the to of the assembly but can't grasp what keeps the outer sheath of the cable seated in the connector.

I see what you mean. There should be a ferrule or nipple on the end of the cable that screws into the piece that the cotter pin fits into. That's what holds the end of the cable in place. If the piece is just threaded with nothing to capture the end of the cable then it's broken and you would need a new cable.  ERC

Is it possible the ferrule just slipped up on the cable and is lurking there?

Here's what the cable should look like with the screw in fitting on it.   ERC

Thanks guys!
Having a ferrule holding the cable sheath to the nipple piece makes sense.  I'm about to leave for vacation in southwestern Virginia (out of cell phone and internet range) in a few minutes so I'll have to look to see if its somewhere up the cable when I get back.
